The problem here is that that is your view. I’m german, I don’t know anything what’s going on over there. The only thing I can do is rely on the reports of people and news, and those are conflicting as fuck. As an example, there was this case where the woman was shot by an ICE officer in her car, it was earlier this year if I remember right. Checking the fediverse, I saw a lot of people that she was just gunned down for walking away or making a rude gesture toward the officer, but checking other news sources I read that she attempted to run over the officers and was shot to prevent her from killing someone. And that puts me in a tough spot. I can’t say that either side is right because the information is conflicting and in current america, both options seem genuinely reasonable as sad as that is. But is that situation important enough for me in germany to actually spend hours researching dozens of different news sources that talk about it so I can have an educated opinion? In my opinion, no.

So when I talk about these kind of things with people who I know have a strong opinion on it, I also usually just say “I don’t do politics” even tho I absolutely do - but the topic we’re trying to talk about is a topic I cannot have an informed opinion about and the person I’m talking to is most likely just going to be crazy mad for not having his opinion.

And you can bet your ass this comment is getting downvoted exactly because of that - people are mad I don’t have their opinion. Not even the opposing opinion, but simply not theirs.

My mind goes to bicycle infrastructure when I think about this. Everyone can cycle, and it has physical benifits for your health, which people of any class can appreciate

Yes, but that is in my immediate community. I don’t give a shit about a bike lane in seattle. I don’t give a shit about a highway in australia. And the topics are so irrelevant to my daily life that it’s just not worth thinking about it.

I think everyone does politics. However, many people just don’t have an opinion on something because they don’t know enough and don’t have the mental capacity to

1. Keep up with everything and
2. Research enough about a topic to have an educated opinion.

Life is hard enough for many people as it is.
