This isn’t criticism, this is taking everything the AI guys would like you to believe, and saying it’s true but while shaking your head rather than nodding.
I don’t think it’s necessarily agreeing that what they say is true. It’s pointing out that if what they say is true, it’s absurd and nonsensical. “This is what you sound like,” was my interpretation.
That’s a fair interpretation.
Exactly what is meant by “asteroid” is left up to the viewers’ interpretation and imagination. I took it to be about climate change.
Don’t expect too much rigour or depth from a short-form video.
What?
Idiocracy was a funny movie, because it felt so absurd. Don’t Look Up was a depressing movie, because it felt too real.
Turns out the former was more real than the latter, who could have seen that coming
This sub: LLMs don’t work and are a waste of energy. Also this sub: the extinction riscs from ai research are intolerable.

Pretty sure you’re yapping at a paid troll. He’s done this enough that I’ve got them tagged, although i don’t actually know them by name.
I mean yeah, but we should be clear that - in so far as these computer programs pose an extinction risk beyond what we’re already facing in climate change - the risk is from degrading social reproduction of knowledge and expertise. Fucking up education, to the point where nobody knows how to maintain or repair key infrastructure, they try to ask the chatbot.

Serious though that is, it unfortunately ranks among the lowest risks humans are exposed to from AI.
Care to give an example of something higher?

Anything coming from inside the industry is marketing bullshit.
“Oh nooo our AI is so powerfullll it’s going to killll everyone!!!1”
And all investors can hear is $$$$
Read the links. The concerns aren’t solely from “inside the industry”.
The explosion in data centres around the world is effectively undoing all of the modest steps towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions. We’re probably already in an unavoidable death spiral for our way of life but continuing down the path we’re on so that people can have a computer write their emails for them and make pictures of naked celebrities means that we’ll probably see that collapse in living standards a matter of decades.
“Why don’t the various members of this fedi community all think the same thing? Checkmate!”
There is an extinction risk because LLMs don’t work. They are next word predictors, so putting them in charge of things that can kill people is a real problem.
(To be clear, LLMs have some real world use cases, but they don’t work when given too much authority because they don’t understand the consequences of what they’re doing. So “don’t work” is entirely contextual.)
Your conment assumes both that a. critics agree with the ai boosters that an extiction risk is posed by the technology and b. the nature of that risk is a high level of ai functionality.
The most realistic doomsday scenario is a large-scale version of the incident recently where AI hallucinations nearly led to the U.S. aatacking a Chinese ship. LLMs are kinda trash to mid at most use cases they’re but towards, that’s part of the risk they pose.
The point of this isn’t even whether or not the risks are real, the point is critiquing the psychopaths building shit that they believe might kill us all. AI boosters’ brains are literally too fucking cooked to understand the critique.
