I uploaded an image and posted, then realised it wasn’t cropped and deleted it about a minute later. Somehow the post has garnered 6 upvotes in the few hours since despite being deleted. How?

because federation is slow
When you post something it gets sent out to every federated instance. When you delete something, it sends a deletion request to all federated instances. Other instances can process this request slowly (or not at all) so you end up with posts/comments that look deleted to you but still show up on other instances.
At least that is my understanding of how it works.
