On Sunday, in a long, rambling Truth Social post, President Donald Trump revealed the real reason he’s been pushing for permanent Daylight Saving Time. Unsurprisingly, it’s for the benefit of golf. What’s more, in the same post, he doxxed a Republican senator by revealing his personal cell phone number.
“Everybody in Arkansas, [Senator] Tom Cotton (R-AK), a friend of mine, is holding up a very important Bill,” posted the president. “It’s called, ‘The Sunshine Protection Act’ or, ‘We Don’t Want to Change Our Clocks Twice a Year Act.’ For some reason, Tom is stopping the Bill and, in the Senate, it’s very easy to do, it only takes one! It should pass overwhelmingly, in a Bipartisan fashion. So, everyone in Arkansas, a State I love, and won 3 times, the last by by 34 points, tell Tom to, GET IT DONE! It will be appreciated by all. Nobody wants to spend their precious time running all over the place, turning Clocks back twice a year and, having sunshine in the afternoon is better than early in the morning!”
Here Trump tipped his hand, revealing his actual justification for the bill: “The PGA TOUR, as an example, needs more Daylight in the afternoon in order to finish their Tournaments. Likewise, regular Golfers, Tennis Players, Hunters and, perhaps most importantly, Farmers who want more Daylight to play or work. See letter from Brian Rolapp, CEO of the PGA TOUR below. 65 percent PLUS want more sun in the afternoon, Daylight Saving Time (The way it is now!), but 100 percent don’t want to change their Clocks twice a year. They want to, as they say, ‘LOCK THE CLOCK!’ Who doesn’t? It’s very expensive for our Nation where you have high and dangerous steeples to reach, like on churches and municipal buildings. Almost everybody wants ‘The Sunshine Protection Act’ to pass, except for Tom Cotton. To the Great People of Arkansas, please let your Senator know it would be a GREAT Bipartisan WIN for the United States Senate, and for America, itself. Call Tom on his cellphone…” The president went on to reveal what he asserts is Cotton’s actual phone number.

We need to go to permanent standard time. Just fall back on November 1st and never change the clocks again.
I just want to see everybody on UTC. Timezones are for suckers.
software engineer spotted
Im tarded so I still have to look up pst/CST/est every single time.
Utc would be sick. Let’s use fucking metric while we’re at it. That would be the only acceptable pork for this bill
Metric Time is the future!
see you at 60 O’Clock!
Now we’re talking
Divide the day into 100 hours composed of ten (metric)minutes each. One day is one kilominute. An hour is a hectaminute. Centiminutes can stand in for a seconds.
I have no objectives to metric time.
There is actual metric time, it’s ten hours a day IIRC. Ten day “weeks,” ten “months” a year, etc. I think the French tried it briefly after the Revolution.
Might work in space communism, but as long as we’re on Earth I think the time system we’re all familiar with is probably so strongly ingrained that switching would be difficult and impractical.
Changing units of mass and volume is one thing, but those don’t literally permeate every aspect of our daily lives and routines the way time does
How do you think UTC time would help anything?
If I started work at 8am EST now that would be 15 UTC.
Someone in CST now working for the same company, do they start their work at 15 UTC? That would be like them starting work at 7am CST.
What about MST? They should start at 15 UTC which would be 6am MST?
You just have people in MST start at 17 UTC?
You’re back to timezones
UTC doesn’t mean everyone has to start at the same time, it just means that 15:00 is 15:00 without calculating offsets, DST boundaries, or the international date line.
Correct.
Correct, no offsets.
Incorrect, there’s no such thing as DST boundaries. Only timezones.
Incorrect, the international date line exists in UTC
But how do you determine when everyone has to start?
People in Michigan could be in MST. They are in CST.
If they went to MST and then went to permanent MDT then it would be just like permanent CST. This is what people don’t understand. Someone in Michigan could hate Daylight Savings Time, but if you told them that their standard time should be changed, then they might want permanent daylight savings time to get it back to “normal”
There is no way to make everyone happy
Depending on how close you live one way or the other to a time zone depends how much you like DST for the most part because it makes it matter more. Also north and south matters.
But if you live in a northwest corner of a time zone you probably hate the idea of permanent DST because your standard time could be a whole hour earlier moving just a yard over.
Idk if you are answering the wrong person or what but DST or standard time is not important to me at all. If your Michigan employer works with new York customers, maybe they start at 1300 UTC. And if they work with California people, maybe its 1600UTC. If they are running a restaurant its maybe 1500 UTC.
It is irrelevant whether they are in Michigan or Florida or the Azores, the absolute UTC start time is just whatever is appropriate for the location and the business.
And there would be no date line if everyone used UTC, there would just be the date which would be the same for everyone. 2300 could be morning in some places and evening in others, but it would be the same date and time.
Yes you can always pick an arbitrary time to start with any system.
Everyone could get on EST and it would be no different than everyone being on UTC. UTC isn’t some special timing system it’s just selecting one timezone to use, like EST.
Imagine if tomorrow the whole US started just using EST. You really think people in California are going to be happy with it? Someone that wakes up at 9 am PST in California would wake up when their clock said 12 pm EST. Their whole daily time routine is shifted 3 hours.
Wake up 8 am PST Lunch 12 pm Dinner 6 pm Sleep 10 pm
It would be
Wake up 14:00 UTC Lunch 20:00 UTC Dinner 2:00 UTC Sleep 6:00 UTC
They would wake up with half the UTC day over and they go to bed early the next day. You’d want to base your day around that? Something like going to gym after dinner would be 3:00 UTC. Yes the daylight level at 3:00 UTC in California is the exact same as 19:00 pm PST. Yet you have to morph your whole schedule around it. Standard time for things like dinner being 18:00 doesn’t exist, it is now a random UTC number depending on where you live. 2:00 UTC in California, 23:00 UTC in Maine.
UTC uses the international date line.
Something as simple as a store having a sale for a day. People in California sleep over half thier day unless they were to order in the “morning” before they go to sleep.
UTC is already an agreed upon standard in some circles. I guess I’m not seeing the problem that people in California show “1600” on thier watches when they go to work. Its arbitrary, work lasts from 1600-0000, why would they need to rearrange thier lives?
Do the numbers on your microwave display have some way to maybe you sleep or wake up?
The international date line is meaningless without time zones, a new day, 00:00, begins at the same time for everyone in the world, there is no line you could cross to move to a different date. 00:00 could be the middle of the night in the UK, or the afternoon in California, or in Japan, but January 1st at 00:00 is still January 1st at 00:00 at all locations.
EST is already an agreed upon standard in some circles.
I want to visit California.
I currently eat dinner at 6 pm EST. National peak is 6:19 pm.
That’s 23:00 UTC.
People in California eat dinner at 6 PST or 9 PM EST or 2 UTC.
So when I get to California I have to figure out what time dinner is at normally?
Maybe that’s the thing I’m not seeing
It’s simple. I leave Maine at 2 UTC and arrive in California at 11 UTC after a 9 hour flight.
I’m in California with a clock that says 11 UTC. At 11 UTC I am usually sleeping but I could get up. So if I slept well on the plane I’d probably leave the airport to go do something. 11 UTC is 3 am PST. California would be sleeping. How do I know when things will open? Generally 8 am to 10 am. It’s 11 UTC, how do I know when it is “Generally 8 am to 10 am” in California UTC time? Think California probably runs 3 hours later then Maine. I know stores open at 12 UTC to 14 UTC in Maine. So they are generally going to open 15 UTC to 17 UTC in California?
Like instead of worrying about what time it is in your home area. You have to worry about what times change to in the new area. You know your home time instantly, but have to convert to “local” time.
And I do see your point of the date line. That is is a perk.
I mean I don’t want to learn a new dinner time. I don’t want to worry what time dinner is in California.
this would cause a confusing disparity between clock days and sky days
“tomorrow” would no longer have a clear meaning
Yada yada.
And this is why we still have daylight savings time.
Why?
