No, it’s like an atheist criticizing the Bible by saying things that are untrue about the Bible. If you care enough about something to be informed enough to make a credible critique, that’s fine. But if you’re just going to harbor and further perpetuate false stereotypes about a thing, maybe just stay in your lane and a, “Hey I don’t know about that stuff and I don’t care,” is all you need.

I’m pretty indifferent to astrology these days, but I have spent enough time studying the basics of how it works that I think anyone criticizing it should also at least have a basic enough understanding of it that they can criticize the thing itself rather than the stereotype of the thing.

If you’re going to attack something for being stupid, it’s a good idea to not be stupid yourself.

I’ve been meaning to give PikaOS a try cause I’m generally a Debian preferrer, but one thing we really need is a Mint that’s been given the Cachy-style treatment. Most new users right now are doing it for the games, so combining the most user-friendly distro with gaming optimizations would be pretty much ideal.

It’s too bad Ubuntu went to shit, because there is one thing that’s nice about choosing it as your first distro: their version numbers are the date, which makes it really easy to remember exactly when you first started using Linux distros. April 2010 in my case.

But no, just go with Mint these days. Everything good about Ubuntu, none of the bad.

  • One way you can think of idolatry is by analogy to the concept of map and territory. The map is not the territory, and that can be far more of a rabbit hole than it sounds at first glance. For instance, you do not experience reality directly, full stop. Your entire experience of life is actually a living map of life generated by reality’s interactions with your senses which are then filtered and interpreted by the rest of your bodily and cognitive systems.

And so it is for those who believe in and cultivate a relationship with their deities - a direct experience that will always be impossible to fully achieve, and is nevertheless expected they spend their lives chasing.

  • To be honest I’ve never found the mechanics in Counter-Strike games enjoyable. Not trying to hate, I’m sure it’s great for those who like it, I just don’t think it’s for me.

I think the two pvp fps games I’ve found to have the closest to ideal mechanics is Doom 2016, and Red Eclipse 2. In Doom I liked that it had some of the more Call of Duty-esque features like loadouts, and a multiplayer progression system. And I especially liked how the actual combat preserved that classic arena shooter feel in kind of an brilliant way. They made it so right click had that iron sights feature, but which also applied a secondary fire ability - but crucially it was entirely optional for basically every weapon. Like in classic arena shooters you could be in constant motion and shoot from the hip without any penalties to your aiming.

Red Eclipse does this too (plus has crazy parkour features), but last I checked lacks any kind of progression system for better and worse.

Titanfall 2 is pretty fun as well, but I am really bad at that game in multiplayer.

  • Oh and to add to my other comment, there’s good reason why soy is the legume of choice, it has a very unique taste, texture, and nutritional profile compared to other legumes. If you can find some pre-cooked canned beans, having a meal with the beans themselves makes their properties very apparent. The texture is completely different to what you would expect from a bean.

  • As already mentioned, the Will it Tofu series is great. There’s another kind of tofu, sometimes known as Burmese tofu, which is basically the whole cooked beans mashed and chilled in a try to form up. The texture is very different since it’s literally just the whole bean.

Also need to mention soy curls. Those are also a whole bean product, with a similar texture to tvp products - makes an amazing alternative to things like chicken strips and pulled-meat products, and unlike tofu, soy curls are great flavor sponges.

Then there’s the whole world of gluten-based products, mainly known as seitan. In stores you can sometimes find plant-based sandwich slices that are overpriced. If you make it at home, you’ll be amazed at the crazy amount of super high protein food you can turn two cups of vital wheat gluten into. I like to blend a block of tofu in with mine, and usually end up with a big log that comes out to about 270 grams of protein in total.

Then if you’re not averse to synthetically augmented products, methylcellulose is the key ingredient that gives products like Beyond and Impossible their characteristic chew.

And I’m sure there’s a lot I’m missing. Plant-based proteins are more of an iceberg than most people realize.

When the planet gets too hot for us to go outside, our dependence on motor vehicles will deepen that much more. But we’ll need ways to interact with the world safely, so engineers will find ways to redesign cars and trucks into relatively almost affordable wheeled mecha. These Mechars will still put us into a lifetime of debt, but that’s okay because the way people use their cars is already like a minihome, and so the mechars will continue that trend of essentially being our homes on wheels, complete with mortgage. We won’t need houses, which is great cause they’ll be demolished to make room for the charging stations for these mechars.

I can’t get the imagery of countless mecha stuck in rush hour traffic out of my head.

  • I’m having my own issues with an old laptop with an nvidia card, but on Fedora. Upgraded from 43 to 44 recently. I love how relatively pain-free Fedora updates and upgrades are, especially for being a somewhat bleeding edge distro.

But after the last upgrade I’m having an issue now where closing the lid to put it into sleep mode causes it to wake to a black screen. I’ve just been having to shut down every time I step away.

    Never getting Nvidia again.
