Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's keeping you from ditching the civilized world and living in the woods?English
16·11 hours agoI’ve given it some thought.
There isn’t enough empty land in temperate climates for someone to survive unmolested outside of civilization, and I don’t have the multitude of skills required to make it in less hospitable climates. If I could find a good source of food I might make it past the first couple weeks, but I’m not hopeful. I’ve never harvested an animal, so that’s a big barrier.
If I had a good solar system and a house on several hundred or thousand acres to get me started it might work out. Better yet if I have some seed and starter food.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Carbrains casually joking about using their 2-tonne murder weapons on cyclistsEnglish
6·1 day agoIt is important to understand what Vehicular Cycling is and how it has entrenched carbrained infrastructure. https://discuss.tchncs.de/comment/28614295

10·1 day agoThat’s also part of the Vehicular Cycling/Forester problem. Forester, distilled and paraphrased, was a proponent of “serious” cyclists, which included the MAML (Middle-Aged Man in Lycra) on racing bikes and excluded the person picking up groceries on a bike with baskets. Which summs up to “cycling is for recreation”. And visibly, the aggressive cyclists tend towards that MAML image, rather than dad picking up groceries or mom cycling to work.

356·2 days agoVehicular cycling advocates have set cycling back decades in USA, with the result being this thought.
A car or a bicycle travelling at 30% of the speed of traffic introduces a considerable risk. It’s why bike lanes aren’t also sidewalks. But it’s not a reason for vehicular homicide!

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft warns against disabling Windows legacy feature that can unlock huge performanceEnglish
17·3 days agoDisabling 8.3 filename creation has been a recommendation in the Best Practices Analyser since Server 2008. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/ff633453(v=ws.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN
I had a GPO to disable it corp wide back then and didn’t have any reports of issues.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•You are going to lead the revolution aren’t you?English
41·3 days agoIt’s less the size and more the density, I think. Also, country dwellers simply don’t understand the problems facing city dwellers and city people constantly diminish concerns of the country people. That leads to a divide and no chance of concerted protests.
I also think a consistent problem facing left wing leaders (at a large scale)is an inability to tap into emotional response, in the face of right wing politicians successfully exploiting emotions.
People need to feel that their actions can make change happen, and they need to be emotionally invested.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How have UK schools got so bad?English
4·4 days agoPlus - the economy of England is two countries: London, and the rest. Massive wealth disparities.
A very simple, though hardly practical rule to follow perfectly is: “Avoid things with ingredient lists.”
Michael Pollan as mentioned elsewhere “eat food, mostly plants, not too much.”
“Avoid the centre of the grocery store” assuming a North American layout (which has regional variations) - the point being that the prepared foods are in the middle, the outside edges are butcher, dairy, and produce.
Some asshole once said, “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.” This is also good advice, despite the source.

10·5 days agoI think that riding mowers look goofy. They’re like a toy tractor. You have a grown ass man riding a power wheels tractor!
That’s on top of the fact they do a worse job in twice the time! One of these is made for drinking beer and one is for getting the job done.
But that’s just my opinion.
