musl is a ringwraith, as the ringwraiths were consumed by their respective rings in much the same way musl is statically linked into programs that use it

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something other people seem to grasp easily that eludes you?
2·6 days agoyou are describing my experience with math almost 1:1, it’s uncanny… division is unintuitive, i’ve re-learned calculus from scratch like four times during my school career and none of the actual math made intuitive sense, trig never clicked. i’ve been doing computer graphics for like 6 years now and despite trig being everywhere i still need like 30 seconds to puzzle out what
sin(0)is for the thousandth time. but i aced combinatorics without even trying as soon as i heard that the funny fraction-looking thing with parentheses is called “n-choose-k”, and if you give me a boolean expression with 5 levels of nested parenthesis and i can simplify it in my head in seconds.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•A month before an election!? BlooMAGA, amirite???
5·6 days agoMany people do not see a functional difference between “enforcing unjust laws” by-the-book compared to “worse ways to enforce unjust laws” (I presume, based on the topic of this particular thread, that you’re alluding to whatever the fuck ICE is doing right now). Whether ICE nicely follows all the regulations while arresting and deporting an immigrant family, or they storm into the house of an immigrant family and beat them up before arresting and deporting them, the net effect is the same when observed from a certain level of abstraction.
To be clear, I personally think it’s clear that the scenario in which the immigrant family gets beat up is worse (as it results in the family being beat up, and the outcome is otherwise the same). However, if presented a “choice” between the two options it’s hard to see the first one as particularly compelling. It’s like asking “would you rather fracture your skull in a car crash, or fracture your skull in a car crash which also breaks your arm?”, it’s hard not to look at the two shitty choices and not be bitter that there isn’t a choice in which you don’t get hit by a car.

2·6 days agoI see a few potential ways someone might disagree:
- Any kind of political revolutionary who doesn’t consider reformism a viable strategy and doesn’t believe their goals are possible to achieve through voting. e.g. even if every US politician were to be replaced with Mamdanis overnight, the US would never progress beyond “capitalism with New Deal-style concessions” without tearing down and rebuilding the entire state from the ground up. See also: how aggressively the political machinery across most of the west mobilizes to discredit and/or oust any prospective politicians with remotely socialist or anarchist views which could threaten capitalists’ position.
- More relevant to the original meme, trans people (or perhaps other minority groups) who have been thrown under the bus in the past by politicians who claimed to support them, only to pivot after being elected, as a number of Democrats have done recently.
- Another train of reasoning I’ve seen: trans people who fear the potential consequences of electing a Democrat with a neutral or anti-trans position. Paraphrasing an explanation I’ve seen, the premise is that while a Republican president (or whatever other position) will almost certainly enact immediate negative changes for trans people, there is still the possibility that a pro-trans Democrat could be elected in the future. However, if an apathetic or actively hostile Democrat were to be elected (e.g. Newsom), it would set trans people back for decades, as the Democrats (always looking for ways to pivot right to appease some hypothetical median voter) would see this and conclude that trans rights are an effective compromise in exchange for winning votes. They would therefore continue to push candidates who act actively against the interests of trans people, making forward progress for trans rights an impossibility for many election cycles.
I should note that I’m neither an American nor would I consider myself a subscriber of any particular political ideology beyond an assortment of vaguely leftist beliefs. This is mainly just me paraphrasing some sentiments I’ve seen/heard which would probably disagree with the comment in question.

2·6 days agoHis original comment reads: (bold emphasis mine)
When voting is treated like the absolutely most important means of political struggle, people do tune out and neglect to organize.
You appear to be interpreting it as if he had said:
When voting exists, people do tune out and neglect to organize.
From what I can tell, his argument was never that the very existence of voting causes political apathy in voters, as you seem to be implying. Rather, he is arguing that the promotion of voting as either the primary or as the only valid form of political action causes voters to disregard other forms.
it’s not nsfw just a shitpost

2·10 days agongl, revanced doesn’t work for me anymore as of yesterday - most videos either drop to 144p after a few seconds and can’t be changed, or simply won’t load past the 1 minute mark. in the past i’ve been able to fix this by updating to a more recent revanced version, but i’m still having this on the latest youtube apk and revanced patches. will give it a few days and see if we get any new updates…

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•What are your favorite tracks from the NES, Genesis, SNES, TG16, etc. era?English
8·13 days agosurprised i haven’t seen much reference to Tim Follin’s work! IMO the title screen music from Plok! is unquestionably the most impressive bit of sound i’ve ever heard from a SNES. just when you’ve picked your jaw off the floor from the amazingly convincing harmonica sound, the lead “guitar” kicks in and your jaw drops again.
for a bit of a more conventional chiptune sound, the NES Pictionary soundtrack (also Tim Follin) hits pretty damn hard considering that it is, well, Pictionary

that’s not really an LLM then, is it?
