  • Hot take: I’d much rather have Dwight as a friend than Jim. He’s eccentric and he’s the butt of the jokes, but he’s shown to be an incredibly reliable friend. He’s always there to help any time someone asks, he’s knowledgeable about a lot of practical matters and is happy to share that knowledge, he’s enthusiastic about his interests, and he’s loyal to his friends. Jim might have some of those traits, too, but we don’t really see it - his primary personality trait is just being a charismatic jokester.

  • A lot of jobs only exist because we need people to be working. There’s no societal need for a door greeter. If your ice cream shop doesn’t generate enough revenue to pay someone working there a living wage, it isn’t a viable business, or your prices are too low.

    You mention UBI and really, that’s the answer, but without it, everyone needs to work to survive and when there isn’t enough work that needs doing, we invent bullshit work just to say we’re employing someone.

  • I thought it worked well before the first Avengers movie… Each hero had their own movie with no real continuity other than the post-credits scene, and then Avengers - and only Avengers - assumed you’d seen the previous ones. The movies were coming out at a reasonable cadence and there was plenty of time to get up to speed. Then they just went off the rails - interconnected continuity even between individual heroes’ movies and a crazy fast release schedule meant you were either a superfan or you were lost.

    I ended up just watching them at a rate of 1-2 a week leading up to Endgame to get caught up, but it was just way too much.

    • 5 films -> Avengers over a 4 year period was reasonable.
    • 12 more films -> Infinity War over a 6 year period was much less reasonable.
    • 3 more -> Endgame in 1 year was just silly.

    Just went and looked it up, and there were another 16 films leading up to Doomsday over 5 years. They’re just releasing things faster and faster. Who can (or even wants to) keep up with that?

  • If there’s work that needs doing, that work should pay a living wage. If it doesn’t, yes, it shouldn’t exist. Raise prices until it can support those workers, and if people won’t buy it at that price, get rid of it. Otherwise, the argument you’re making is that someone needs to do this work, but that person should be destitute.

    If someone wants to do something on the side as a hobby, that’s fine, and that’s not what we’re talking about here, obviously.

  • Assuming you’re serious, which I’m not entirely sure you are, S being above A originally had Japanese origins where the character it represents means ‘Excellent’, and on English lists it typically means ‘Superlative’ (or any similar word starting with S, like Superb or Super). This is not a new thing.

    Regardless, this is an S+ tier ragebait shitpost and clearly it’s having its desired effect.

  • Yeah, I appreciate what it was trying to do - it had some good scenes in it; the gas station confrontation in the beginning was well done, and did a good job of setting the stage for how they were adapting the original text into a modern movie, but I thought the movie itself just drug on, and the more I think about it now, I think the scenes I did enjoy, I enjoyed largely because of the banger soundtrack. I did buy that CD, though, back in the day, and listened to it a lot.

  • I agree with you, but this also raises an interesting question. Personally, I wouldn’t consider it a consent issue if someone sent the usual “two circles and an oval” ‘dick’ drawing, or an eggplant emoji… Rude and crass, maybe, but not any more of a consent issue than sending any other non-sexual unsolicited pic would be, which suggests that there’s a level of caricature and lack of fidelity in which it’s okay… I wonder where that line is?

  • I think there’s a big difference between that and doing it when it’s about a person. I’d imagine the conversation was something like “My husband can’t cook at all, how’s yours?” and she responded that he’s great while the other women agreed that their husbands were awful. Would you instead make your husband sound worse than he is just to fit in with the group? How would you feel about it if it got back to him that you’d said that? Or, conversely, how would you feel about it if you found out that your SO was bad-mouthing you to their friends behind your back just to fit in?

    I know for me, if I found out that my wife was complimenting something I did to her friends, that would make my day; if I found out she was downplaying something I thought I did well, it would make me feel pretty awful.
