  • Oh right. There’s nothing wrong with generalised statements at all; in fact they’re mandatory for communicating. We can’t explain the whole world every time we speak. They work really well in face-to-face conversations or over the phone.

But people in online spaces, especially Lemmy and Reddit, often miss implications, see nuance as weakness, and will jump on it. It’s just the nature of the platform. Some people are like this in real life too, but it’s easier to just “talk it out” and clarify what you meant if they misunderstood.

Personally, I just accept that people will take issue with my comments and deal with it. But I’ll break down which parts of your statement were generalised.

consuming sugar can lead to type 2 diabetes

    • What kind of sugar? The implication is added refined sugar, but people with nutrition backgrounds might take offence. There’s many other kinds like whole fresh fruit is considered protective.
    • How often does it need to be consumed? The implication is people eating significant amounts of added sugar per day, I think 50g (1.7oz) is the current upper limit recommended; but people who have 1tsp sugar in their coffee in the morning might take offence. A small amount is usually fine.
    • Is sugar the only cause? The implication is that sugar is just one of many risk factors, but some people might read it as sugar being the only cause. There’s many factors that can lead to type 2 'beetus, such as: lack of exercise, obesity, genetics, comorbidities, etc.

So, a tighter, more specific version might look like:

Consuming excessive refined sugar can increase your risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

Can’t poke as many holes in that, but it hardly rolls off the tongue. Again nothing wrong with your version at all, just explaining why some people might have taken issue with it.

  • Ignore what everyone else says. They’re applying their own moral judgements to what is ultimately your own personal decision.

Whenever someone posts this they’re usually feeling guilty for enjoying the Harry Potter series. Personally, I can’t enjoy Harry Potter anymore because the author is transphobic and awful. It makes me sad to watch it anymore because of that. If I found out later that something I enjoyed is also made by an author I dislike, I similarly stop enjoying it.

You might think that’s silly, but think of it like Nestle. You can enjoy their chocolate, it’s genuinely good chocolate. But they’re one of the most evil companies on the planet. It’s your personal decision, nobody else’s, whether you’re willing to ignore that, and still eat their chocolate and support their business practices. It’s a psychological phenomenon known as cognitive dissonance.

As for dead people… it’s more nuanced. If it’s from 100+ years ago; basically everyone was racist etc back then, so it’s more a sign of the times changing. If they died yesterday, that doesn’t fly.

So my moral framework can be summarised as:

    • I don’t like financially supporting evil
    • I don’t like culturally supporting evil subtexts or evil authors
    • Historical works get a pass

You’ll need to find your own moral framework, something you can work on and stand by with pride. Don’t just copy others’.

Yeah I’m a noncompliant sleeper myself. 26 hour circadian rhythm so I just sleep whenever I happen to be tired that day. Doctors told me I’m being unreasonable and should just sleep hygiene harder as if I’ve not tried that lol. But I try to be an optimist when reading stuff I guess, like reading it in a generous way if I can

There’s a reason nobody keeps a treadmill for long… they’re machines designed only to exercise in the most boring way possible; cruel monuments of the worst possible method to maintain health. The actual answer is what you said: to find something you enjoy that requires movement and exertion, and do it every day.

Maybe I’m naïve but I read it as “going to bed early relative to when you normally go to bed”. For example, if I normally sleep at 9:00pm, then being in bed at 8:30pm so that I actually get all the sleep that I’m supposed to; instead of going to bed at 9:30pm and missing out on a whole hour’s sleep (assuming it takes 30 minutes to nod off).
