Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
12·2 days agoThey’re not there to assist you. They are there to monitor you so you wouldn’t steal more € than the self-checkout is cheaper than the staff it replaces.
In one of my local supermarkets there were 4 normal checkouts but never more than 2 of them were open because they’re understaffed. They recently replaced 1 of them by 4 self checkout machines, it’s soooo much faster now and lines are a lot shorter when it’s shopping rush hour!

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•I don't fucking *want* "infinite personalized music", I want music conceptualized, created, and played by human beings.
5·7 days agothe social component to them is that they ‘control’ an enormous fleet of streaming listeners this way.
Inb4 “mind controlling tones” meets “who has a big pile of money for us?” Don’t forget music has a power to strongly influence or even set a humans’ moods, also on election days.

From a network perspective it wouldn’t make sense to build a Chicago - New York straight line with 0 stops… You’ld better link up Chicago to Cleveland, probably even do the Detroit detour and continue that in an expensive Appalachian tunnel to Washington DC. Then in a separate project build a high speed rail connecting the east coast cities: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington…
The blind believe in 1 strong man at the top and a clear strict hierarchy are key ideas within far right ideology. It’s easier to organise the right, but it’s also easier for the right to en masse follow the crazy dumb ideas of that leader. Left organising from grassroots up is a lot harder, but in theory better.

What Brits actually look like

It doesn’t matter how boring you are. You are still a voter and a consumer to be squeezed maximally for profit and to be diverted from revolting and chopping billionaires heads off, just like every other person on earth
