Repost bots discourage new users and kill engagement.

Suppose you’re into trampolines but there’s no community for that here. You create one, and to kick start it you get a repost bot to repost from the other place.

Over the coming weeks a few fediverse users see your community but see that they’re all reposts with no comments, there’s nothing to really engage with there, so no one does.

Next month someone signs up to the fediverse and joins a few special interest communities. /c/sports, /c/gymnastics, and /c/trampolines. There might actually be real posts and discussions in /c/sports, but that new users feed is overrun with reposts in /c/trampolines. It’s a very clear signal that there’s no content here, all the content is on reddit.

If you actually want a community, then you can read about trampolines on the other site, and manually repost things yourself as a human.

They actively discourage new users, and engagement.

That’s the economists angle, yes, but that’s not what I’m getting at.

You can’t make a business with AI because anyone can use an LLM to do anything an LLM can do.

There are exceptions in the short term, but they may not last. For example, we’re paying a hefty subscription fee for an AI service that scrapes financial data from scanned pages. It’s much more accurate than traditional OCR.

Presently its better than its competitors so commands a premium price. However, I don’t think it will enjoy that position for long.

It would be trivial to monitor the inbound and outbound traffic from these models, but they don’t bother.

This is kinda fundamental to economics: the moment AI learns to perform some task, that task becomes less valuable.

Trying to make people feel bad for driving cars isn’t going to work, but just trying to humanise people on bikes can’t hurt.

Honestly, I think the best solution for the time being is 2 part: for more people to ride bikes or be pedestrians, and a public awareness campaign to convince motorists that they need to be mindful of other types of road users.

Tracks between municipalities do exist, but not everywhere, they’re not used very much and often in disrepair.

You’re right that animals avoid well used tracks (in some cases) but where I live, the lack of people on bikes is the core problem.

IDK whether what Trump is doing meets the definition of “insider” trading because the law is intended to prevent CEO’s and managers trading on the strength of pre-release financial information.

However, like a great many of the behaviors of this administration, no one ever really thought of making it illegal in the past for two reasons. Firstly presidents have always had respect for the office, some less so than others but they were all somehow aware of their duty to fit and proper conduct. Secondly everyone assumed that if a president were to very unashamedly enrich themselves through the office, they would be removed from office.

Just take appropriate precautions.

You could just as easily fall and injure yourself and be in a similar situation.

For snakes, you have to be aware that they’re around, don’t ride through grass or foliage where you couldn’t see them, and if you do see one don’t stop next to it. I have a pressure bandage kit, and I have a personal locator beacon in case there’s no phone reception.

Snakes are a real problem on narrow trails in Australia. On a bike they can’t sense the vibrations from your footfalls so they can’t get out of your way.

Also mobile / cell coverage is patchy. If you get bit then walking / riding is the worst thing you can do, but if you don’t have cell coverage then you’re cooked.

Bush tracks are ok, but be very, very mindful of snakes. Bush bashing is generally a bad idea. You’ll pick up ticks from foliage, and snakes can’t feel your vibrations and you can’t see them soooo…

Being on the road is generally ok, but a wing mirror is essential. You really need to be able to see traffic approaching behind you.

Cars can move around you but for road trains I just get off the road and stop on the shoulder. They’re too wide to leave any room for you, and the “bow wave” of air pushes you away, but then the void behind them pulls you on to be road, ready to be collected by the traffic following.

If there’s an assertion that a super intelligence is about to emerge, the evidence for that assertion just isn’t available to the public.

Like you say, if someone was developing a time machine, and the only evidence of their progress was their ability to transmit a message to the future via email, you would conclude that time travel does not exist.

Bold claims require testable evidence and presently there isn’t any.
