I was never able to get it to work reliably. For those mentioning XMPP, Jami uses a serverless approach with a distributed hash table instead. In principle it has better privacy but in reality it’s flaky. IDK for sure if the flakiness comes from the DHT but either way I gave up. I might try again sometime.

Ya know, as someone mentioned, some parts of Usenet are still pretty good despite all the attacks. Same with some parts of reddit despite Spez (I don’t post on reddit any more but I still lurk sometimes). Other than that I’m sometimes on a few niche forums mostly related to nerdery. For technical reasons (i.e. because of some not-great software decisions) I don’t like Lemmy all that much, but the community is ok and the implementers’ hearts were in the right place.

I’m sorry but this is kind of a wtf to me. What’s wrong with a text file? I thought I was being fancy by using org mode, which is just a text file with some markup. If you want to be really fancy you could use a bug tracker. fossil-scm.org has a built in one that I might try sometime.

Yeah this is pretty cool. The front part of the brain develops from a different progenitor cell than the brain stem. There has been a ton of difficulty over the years trying to grow hindbrain cells from forebrain progenitors. It’s because they were using the wrong progenitors. So they may be able to make more progress treating hindbrain conditions like ALS. I have no idea why nobody tried this decades ago but there’s probably a reason.

A lady I connected with online (not a dating site or similar) asked if I was willing to help with a web site. I said ok and we met up at a nearby late night restaurant. It turned out it was a porn site and she was a porn actress, wanting to have her own site instead of the exploitive one that she was then on. We had a nice conversation about all kinds of things including web development.

The restaurant was not fancy but she spent a while picking out the cheapest things on the menu. I was the one who suggested the meeting place and I inferred that she was having cash flow problems while I was working as a programmer, so I figured I should pick up the tab when it came. It was just the considerate thing to do. When I picked it up, she freaked out as if I expected something from her because of it. She left the restaurant in a big hurry and I didn’t hear from her after that, oh well.

She was an interesting person, and attractive, and I didn’t anticipate that reaction at all. I like to think we could have gotten to know each other better if I’d let her pay her own tab. Shrug, whatever.
