Technology@lemmy.world•Former SR-71 Engineer Talks NASA's Blackbird Revival ProgramEnglish
31·3 days agoUh huh.
Yep.
They seem to be fine with that, just causing Kessler Syndrome.
Now the SR 72 is not retired, because satellite based anything becomes extremely difficult to achieve, at best, and you can put cameras and comms datalinks on them, and have them do what satellites can now not do.
Could also do ground attack on static / slow moving targets: Mach 4-6 from half a continent away, over to a target area, slow down, open bomb bay, drop a glide bomb (or a lot of em), close up, speed back up and fly away.
You now have comms intel and air superiority, at least in an offensive sense; you destroyed the previous paradigm with your new paradigm.
If you can get a reliable ‘bombtruck’ style airframe, human piloted or autonomous, working at around the Mach 5 range… who has anything that can shoot that down?
The SR 71 wasn’t really stealth, it just flew too high and too fast for anything to be able to touch it.
Oh and for the ‘glide bombs’, just do what the Iranians seem to be doing: outfit some of them with a secondary boost phase that triggers semi-randomly, based on the munition either sensing its near the target, or, sensing that something is trying to intercept it.
This also greatly relieves the entire problem of highly expensive single use long range missiles… just have a ferry for them, ease the cost and design specs of the actual munitions by doing 80% of their job.

51·3 days agoMy thought is that renewed interest in this and the not strictly confirmed but seemingly under active developement SR-72 is…
… Platform for high altitude launched, satellite killing missiles.
For a long time the US got to enjoy being basically the only power with a stupendous intelligence advantage from a network of spy and comms satellites vast enough to get total coverage, basically everywhere, at pretty low time lags.
Well now, others have comparable capabilities.
So, develop a way to remove that.
We’ve been able to shoot down satellites from aircraft launched missiles since the 80s.
We’ve specifically called for the end of tests of ground launched anti-satellite missiles, leaving aircraft launched anti-satellite missiles as a neat little carve out in our own rhetoric/intl. policy ‘suggestions’.
So, in a world where spy and comms sats are just viewed as valid targets in a large scale war/operation, a fleet of mach 3+ / potentially hypersonic aircraft that can deny intel to the opponent and likely also gather your own intel, that’re significantly harder to shoot down than a satellite… seems like a plausible doctrine to me.
Space Force.
How many milspacefurcadets are there?
I wonder if there are enough furry us mil veterans on lemmy to make an active comm for them.
… I wonder if that already exists and I just don’t know about it.

Personally I’d go with the former, probably not both simultaneously.

Gaming@lemmy.zip•"Without us, Bethesda games aren’t Bethesda games": Rallies against Microsoft layoffs at Elder Scrolls studio continue, with unionised devs' morale "on the upswing"English
0·2 months agoYeah sorry Bethesda hasn’t made a good game in over a decade, found your own studio about it.
Modders have been outdoing you idiots for years, fixing your mistakes.
Devs in general deserve better, not fucking Bethesda devs though, nope.
And now for bigotry:
… found the aussie/kiwi? possibly brit?
I mean… you can’t vibecode well, nobody can, your example here well illustrates that.
Vibecoding -> the magic machine operates via special incantations, and that makes me a magician!
AI-assisted coding -> Ok this hallucinating genius dumbass ram devouring monster is simultaneously very capable in some ways and horrendously stupid in others… if I am very gentle and precise with it, as one would be with a toddler, it may be very helpful, but I can never assume it may not have a critical and fundamental incomprehension of some kind.
LLMs are clearly useful, in the right hands.
They’re great for a senior or mid level dev to use as an extremely fallible assistant.
They’re good for junior devs to both learn some basics about code and also some basics about how LLMs are not magic.
Like, plug a junior dev into an LLM and then the ask the dev to review the resulting code.
That’s not a bad way to train up a junior dev.
… But this shit isn’t production ready just because it involved an LLM at some point!
Its literally all experimental!
C Suite and Managers are just fucking idiots!
It is just that simple!
They don’t want to do their jobs anymore, and they fell for marketing hype.
I’m genuinely less mad at dumbass but eager vibe coders caught up in a delusion… they’re disproportionately inexperienced, they wouldn’t really have a way to know better.
The dumbasses in charge that are cramming the kind of workflow and workforce setup you describe down everyone’s throats?
These fucking idiots should know better.
They basically could not be more perfectly incompetent, and they should be roundly laughed at and openly mocked as the idiot clowns they are, to their faces, all the time, everywhere, including work settings.
Literally the survival of the human species may depend on our ability to point out and identify to these people’s faces that they are in fact complete fraud morons.
I mean, I use a local LLM in much the way I would do pair or partner programming with another person… one person is in charge but the other is actively reviewing, checking for problems… but then maybe you both switch at a point where one has a different kind of idea, or one person is totally befuddled.
So… that’s not the same as just ‘chatgpt write my entire codebase’… which yeah, basically is just sitting in the cuckchair…
Maybe the way I’m talking about is more like an active threesome, somebody is analagously the unicorn, I dunno, hahaha!
At this point, I think most non uptight people have taken to using ‘knob slobberer’, ‘ball fondler’, ‘bouncin on that thing and doin tricks on it’… etc… mostly as just a sex/gender/orientation independent ways of saying you’re a simp, you’re a sycophant, you’re a toadie, something like that.
(Most people have a mouth and at least one lower orifice of some kind and a hand or two)
The idea is that you’re overly subservient, not that you’re any kind of orientation.
Yeah they’re still used by bigots as bigotted slurs in some contexts, but just broadly, society has gotten measurably more comfortable discussing sex, in any context or capacity.
Maybe another comparable thing is like how ‘you guys’ has basically become gender neutral, in many contexts.
Like, I’m a bi dude, and if somebody who knew that about me called me a fag, half in jest, I’d probably respond playfully, not… insulted and indignant.
Same with queer… that’s not even an insult to me in any way, its just a … factually accurate description.
Sure if you use those terms with clear derisive invictive (invective?), then yes its a bigotted insult/slur, but… yeah context matters, there are many other contexts where I wouldn’t find those terms insulting at all.
Like at least to myself personally, cocksucker is an equal opportunity insult roughly the way bastard is… it implies duplicity, perfidy… not sexual orientation.

It looks like you’re trying to make an 00s throwback joke. Can I help you with that?
=P
