U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, the Republican nominee for governor of Alabama, criticized transgender people, their parents and their doctors on the Senate floor Thursday.
Tuberville claimed transgender people are mentally ill and a danger to others.
He said that airline pilots who are transgender or wear fursuits are “deranged” and suggested more LGBTQ people should be institutionalized.
“It is the best interest of our country to bring back mental institutions as a normal part of our society, instead of sweeping it under the rug,” Tuberville said, standing next to a sign that said “Transgenderism is a Mental Illness.”
“I want to be clear about this gender confusion,” he said.
“It is not normal. It is a cry for help, and our society needs to stop affirming people who are suffering from this mental illness.”
Its creepy how obsessed they are with transgender people. Why are they so obsessed? To what point and purpose would institutionalizing these people solve? Like, I’m not seeing how transgender people existing harms people.
Also, who’d pay for this? We don’t even have universal health-insurance in America. So, what? We involuntarily incarcerte transgender people and then charge them for their own extermination treatment?
Also also, how would the 5th Amendment come in?
If he wants mentally ill people to be institutionalized again we will need more of those facilities than schools. People with serious life-threatening mental illness are on waiting lists for beds and he wants to prioritize people who are stable when they get the care they need outpatient? And no one is harmed by said treatments?
Wasn’t it their holy Ronnie Reagan that closed mental institutions? Like their whole foundation is built on closing down access to mental health services.
Most of the mental institutions then were horrible places and needed to be shut down. The big problem is they weren’t replaced with anything.
He wants the “institutions” of old where the purpose was containment, not treatment. Out of sight, out of mind. These people were often tormented and treated like unruly animals for their entire lives with no recourse.
That’s actually really well put and a great argument that cuts through all this bullshit.
I was around before they killed institution support. When I was diagnosed with depression, I was terrified because I thought I was going to be locked up in one of those places. Freaked out in the doctor’s office. No one should fear being trapped in there if they aren’t actively harming themselves and others.
