Science doesn’t really happen if we continually ask “Why do this?” Science happens when we ask “Why not do this?”
If we want to be a galactic civilization, we must first learn to live on worlds otherwise uninhabitable. The engineering challenges we must overcome to make that happen will give us the knowledge and experience we need to make it possible to expand past our solar system. This is a very long term advancent, and what we do today is what our offspring will do with ease.
Other than political roadblocks, the final roadblock to galactic expansion is FTL travel. We have theories on how to make it possible, but we are limited to the engineering and knowledge of our time now. Far future generations will be the ones to discover if and how to make it possible, but they need the foundational knowledge and experience of how to live in space.
This is the real tragedy of the modern data center. In the rush to be number one, they’ve captured the government at the top and use their influence to bypass environmental regulation and pollute at a grand scale just to save a dollar and some construction time. We could have had datacenters running on solar+batteries that could easily make money powering the grid as well, but no, we need to feed the oil machine and we let them run burner turbines unregulated. We could have had datacenters running closed-loop cooling, but no, we let them draw water directly for their cooling systems and dump it unfiltered back into the environment, further polluting it with heavy metals.
As long as one man desires to have more riches than another, this will never be solveable, I’m afraid. The shame.

Where I’m at, they added a “bike lane” on the highway… Which is literally just the shoulder barely wide enough for a cyclist… on a very busy highway that sees lots of trucks and trailers and wide loads, in addition to people travelling at highway speeds. No divider, just a paint line.
That’s not a bike lane, that’s an accident about to happen.
We need real bike lanes, divided by something more than 2 inches of paint, to prevent traffic fatalities.
One setup is like this for me… And the answer is stupid but it works. Apart from using Unifi dish antennas, it was using outdoor self-bury cable and a series of self-powering outdoor PoE repeaters. Bury the whole thing and you can get Ethernet out there no problem. All you need is enough power via a PoE switch or injector to power the chain.

This is not just an American problem. Other western countries have this issue as well, and I hope people in other nations see the danger and keep themselves healthy.
Unfortunately, the gap between what people make, what people need to survive on ramen noodles and a closet for living in, and what people need to be able to save up for retirement, not just now, but when they are ready for retirement when inflation has vastly devalued their savings, is a very big gap. Only the most successful and lucky individuals get to retire at a reasonable age. The rest are work until they die poor. This was not true for many of the oldest generation, who had more buying power out of the money they made, but true for almost everyone that’s first entered the workforce after the 1990s is facing this problem.
