That said, I had a coworker in his 50s who continued to work after having a near life ending cardiac event. He was the company CTO but couldn’t afford to retire because he couldn’t afford private insurance.
Died last year, after having a follow up event and spending his last few months in hospital.
If CPR is keeping your blood flowing for 10 mins then you don’t have vitals. CPR stops when your vitals comes back or when they pronounce you are dead-dead.
That’s not the case.
- people round numbers. In a casual setting 8 minutes and 10 minutes are the same.
- 10 minutes without detectable vital signs is survivable, albeit extremely serious.
- If you have sudden cardiac arrest and get CPR from a random bystander you have a 20% chance of surviving to leave the hospital. The sooner a defibrillator can restart the heart the better.
- I’m not sure why you say they should have still had vitals with a heart attack. Most heart attacks don’t leave you with none, but it’s not all by any means. Lack of blood flow to the heart can easily cause it to stop beating.
Ultimately though, the part that matters is that the part you found implausible was the medical details, not that someone would go back to work shortly after a severe emergency while still concerned about their own sudden death because they can’t afford to recover.

Fun fact: people are often hesitant or uncomfortable to do effective AED and CPR on peeps with breasts because they either weren’t taught about it or are too embarrassed. Get out my tits if I’m buying the farm. I’d rather my girls get exposed than fucking die.
For the curious: It’s ok if you end up touching breast tissue when performing CPR. It happens, especially for those with large breasts.
When using an AED you need to expose the chest and remove/cut off the bra to get the pads placed correctly, to avoid arcing with an underwire, and to get gel on the skin under the pads.
The problem is that you may feel that way, but other people may not, and it’s not always clear why someone may be passed out on the ground. There are also reasons like drugs, poverty, etc, and so if someone guesses and does upset someone, it can be a terrible situation for the person who has ripped a shirt and pushing down on someone’s chest. I know I’ll be downvoted for this, but laws very greatly on this most likely and I certainly don’t know them. I appreciate your comment, and you’re right that when in doubt people should try to do CPR, but also don’t know how this can change in the real world for strangers or bystandards.

Defibrillators don’t restart the heart, that’s a common misconception. They effectively shock-reset it so that it can resume its normal beating rhythm.

The AED can only reset electric rythyms. Not every source of not having a pulse is due to chaotic electrical rhythm, not every electrical issue has a lack of pulse. “Stopped” and “restart” are ambiguous. I would generally forgive the usage of “not working” and “make start working” from anyone less trained than an EMT.

Long- and short-term disability need regulation. Companies cut funding to their own employees at times when it hurts the most while also throwing them to the health insurance vultures.

It does in the US too. I’m not sure what the previous commenter is talking about with companies cutting off funds. No company I’ve ever worked for paid workers for disability time. They throw you over to the government for that at the first opportunity, though they may be involved to the extent of validating yes this person works here, etc.

I believe they are talking about company-sponsored short term and long term disability, STD and LTD. LTD commonly covers a percentage of your wages… my companies provides 60% with an upper limit.
Government provided disability you have to qualify for and requires an application process. It doesn’t provide much money either, which is why companies often have LTD benefit plans a person can enroll in.
