If so, that’s a good sign that the world has progressed. I was thinking recently how 99% of the time you hear the word “progress” it’s satiric and about knocking down your grandma’s house to build a data center or whatever. But actual progress can happen.

Yes. Massively so. I hear people say things like “Chinese oil” and it doesn’t make any sense to me. There is virtually no Chinese oil. There is Chinese financing, and there is Chinese refining services.

I think this guy is an entertainment puffball who is not cut out to have sophisticated opinions on anything or any opinions about sophisticated matters, but he is fast becoming a textbook case on how that doesn’t matter because you can’t simply throw up your hands at genocide and say “I’m not a political person.”

What a spineless position. Why pass any laws at all? Why not leave everything up to the whims of whoever is in office?

Doesn’t the legislature decide issues all the time and enshrine those decisions for the future in law? Isn’t that what they do? Why the fuck should extradition for providing healthcare be any different? Isn’t he “eroding the authority” of the legislature in saying no, we should leave this as governor’s discretion, just in principle?

I’m not just hating Newsom reflexively here. I seriously don’t understand his argument, despite trying.

I don’t understand why the OS and file system don’t constitute, themselves, a database. Over the years I have spent a lot of time organizing my photo names, folders, and labels. I want a display service that will take advantage of that, not change it, and update immediately to any changes I make to it.

Anyone who is actually responsible for the uptime of anything understands the difference between 3 nines and 4 nines and how significant it is to gain or lose a nine.

Rather than guess at which percentage representation is more intuitive to people, the blog post suggests something more concrete:

instead of: GitHub Actions: 98.31% uptime.

We say something like: GitHub Actions: 12 hours affected in the last 30 days (98.31% uptime).

I’ve been presenting numbers to people for a long time and I know they flip back and forth between “these percentages are abstract - what’s the actual total number?” and “how do I put these totals in perspective? What percentage is it?” The blog post suggests offering both, which is the right choice.
