Used to run LAN parties. We had a big bag of ethernet cables we inherited from the people who ran it before us, and like 50% of them had no tab. Eventually we chucked them out.

I remember trying to terminate some Cat5e in uni. I don’t think a single one of the cables I made up were able to do gigabit… actually I don’t think a single one was able to do 100 megabit. I’m colourblind so ordering the wires correctly was essentially impossible, but all of us involved were fucking up in various ways…

This was a question for me in like 2012 when they started becoming more common here. Never did it occur to me that it was my responsibility to maintain a level of inefficiency in my life to keep someone else employed in a shit job. To me, that kind of calculus is absolutely wild.

I generally believe most of the unrepairability we see in tech is coming from consumer preferences more than planned obsolescence. Thin, waterproof phones are inherently hard to repair. I’m sure obsolescence is a factor that motivates companies in that direction too, but reputation around longevity does influence purchasing decisions, so it’s not something which they can do “for free” as it were. Making phones thin and light, on the other hand, is positive for sales.
