Since we’ve obviously all read the article before commenting, I thought I’d post a short snippet as a reminder that the author has considered the question.

Subtitles are glorified text files, each line has a timestamp, like

00:07:34,480 --> 00:07:38,080 Exterminate! Exterminate!

This tells the player to display the line from 7 minutes, 34 seconds, 480 milliseconds until 7 minutes, 38 seconds, 80 milliseconds.

If you want the subtitles to be earlier, you’re subtracting from those times so it’s minus, if you want them to be later, you’re adding so it’s plus.

I get that but I wouldn’t know any such way. There are dedicated subtitle tools that can sync audio and text but those need the files. Failing that you can only do it by ear.

If the subtitle file was downloaded from opensubtitles automatically, there’s also the very real possibility that it’s the wrong file. It might be the correct movie but the subtitles might be synced to a different framerate and there’d be no way for you to know.

Oh so you don’t actually have access to the files themselves. That’s unfortunate. Then I fear you’re at the mercy of whoever wrote that browser plugin.

It also arises simply from digital copies of DVDs that don’t come with subtitles. Which I unfortunately know too much about.

Edit: Right, I see people are sensitive about this and not understanding is illegal. If you’re interested, this looks incredibly normal to me, and I assume there will be some spots for parking around a corner somewhere. It’s also outside so I don’t know what the number of stairs of surrounding buildings has to do with anything. But alright.

I wouldn’t consider anything Peterson has to say about anything.
