PICs are cheaper than discrete ICs, even if they’re programmed only once and shipped. This is why you’ll see mainboards with un-populated sections - the processor has a software build that either excludes the un-populated parts or is designed to detect and ignore them. A discrete IC would need far more engineering to be able to selectively ignore, or each model would need it’s own discrete IC.

Salt water is really hard on plumbing. At best it could be used as a secondary cooling loop.

A good chunk of the issue is the water is taken from freshwater reserves which do not get replenished by rain/snow as fast as they are drained. Most of that rain ends up in the oceans and becomes non-potable water.

One feature that Reddit has that Lemmy still hasn’t managed to replicate is that it’s feed will weight your subscribed subs higher but still include non-subscribed posts. On Lemmy, I can only choose between local/subscribed/all, where local/all ignores the comms I’ve subscribed to (they still show up but in their default sort location), and subscribed only shows the comms I’ve subscribed to.

I miss that hybrid sorting… it meant that I could sub to stuff that makes me happy, and still get posts from other places mixed in.

There’s also aesthetics and other factors. Most people don’t want the super-rugged phones with the rubberized bits and so on.

Another thing to consider is sometimes people don’t want to (or can’t) spend top dollar on something that will last forever. For example, if I’m new into a hobby, I’m not going to go out and buy the absolute best out there. I’ll usually shoot for somewhere in between “not shit” and “fairly decent” depending on what it is. If I get good enough and want to upgrade, then at that point I can look at the higher-end stuff and I’ll have the bonus of now knowing what properties I need to look for. If the cheaper equipment is still working I can re-sell or donate it. If not, maybe I’ll try to fix/mod it before tossing.

I think the state is responsible for making sure she lives a life of absolute comfort for what they did to her. If that costs $10M, then so be it. If taxpayers complain that the state is paying out these expensive suits, then the taxpayers should be seeking change.

Buried in the article, it came out that the face they used as “proof” was the picture on the FAKE ID that the actual suspect used. They did exactly 0 investigative work. The computer spat out a picture with a name and they just went in guns drawn.

Did you even read the article? She was treated horrifically. Arrested at gunpoint in front of the children she was babysitting. Held in jail for 6 months and then taken to North Dakota 1200 miles from her home before someone even bothered to look into her alibi. She was left on the side of the street outside the jail IN NORTH DAKOTA 1200 MILES FROM WHERE SHE LIVED WITH NO MONEY OR COAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WINTER.

She lost her home and her pet. Without the home she can’t babysit, so no livelihood. Unless there’s someone to house her and get her back on her feet, the state just took someone living a normal life and made them broke and homeless. If your primary concern is insurance rates, fuck you. Fuck you because none of this has a chance of increasing ANYONES insurance because insurance is not paying her lawsuit.

During prohibition era, there was a brick of dried grapes being sold as a nutrition supplement or something like that, but it had a “warning” sticker attached saying specifically not to dissolve it in a specific quantity of water, and if that were to happen, do not let a specific quantity of yeast to fall in it, and especially not to let it sit for 6 weeks, or else you might end up with wine, which is forbidden!
