  • Years ago I used to live relatively close to a car wash. During the winter months I would pay for a monthly subscription to the car wash. On cold mornings with heavy snowfall I would clear enough of my car to see both wing mirrors, out part of the back windshield, and part of the front windshield, enough that, being very vigilant, I had a good sense of my surroundings. I’d then drive directly to the car wash, which would clear the rest of my car for me while I stayed in the nice warm car.

I stand by this practice, but I was more attentive than usual in my driving on those mornings.

Organizations like the NHTSA actually do study car accidents and safety. There’s a problem of scale though. There are so many more car accidents than plane crashes that studying them thoroughly in an individual manner becomes impossible.

But investigations do happen, especially when trends evolve. Hence all the various improvements to car safety over the decades. There’s been a significant reduction in automobile related casualties per distance driven over the history of the technology. Think things like crumple zones and seatbelts, and more recently automatic braking.

  • Adding my personal favorite, 7/8 time. (My wife and I bonded on our second date because we share the same favorite time signature…we’re dorks.) I love it because our brains are expecting an even number of beats, and since it’s missing just a single eighth note when the next measure begins it almost feels like the song is falling forward or rushing.

You CAN count it sequentially, but it’s much easier to count like this:

    1 2 1 2 1 2 3

    or

    1 2 3 1 2 1 2

Or if the composer was feeling spicy, both alternating back and forth.

Example 1: I Am The Doctor Song begins in 7/8 time, it begins quarter quarter quarter eighth if you want help counting it.

Example 2: Subdivisions by Rush I count this one as beginning in 7/8 time, quarter quarter dotted quarter, and I especially love it because it seamlessly transitions into 4/4 time at about 19 seconds in.

  • You’re right, it may be considered a bad idea to say “you’re right” if you do not want to sound like an AI.

Rather than “you’re right,” instead try “that’s a good point” or “I hadn’t thought of it like that.”

(I don’t use AI enough to know if this sounds like AI. I feel like I haven’t made it unnecessarily verbose enough.)
