If you’re looking for a remote senior software engineer (most recently golang, but I’ve worked in a little bit of everything in the last 20 years), I’d love to hear from you. Japan PR, Canadian and US citizenship. Native English speaker, proficient Japanese, learning Norwegian (now between A2 and B1, though listening/speaking is lagging a bit due to lack of chance to practice), and some very rusty German and French I could get back to speed on.

On individual points, yes, but I hardly engage these days. This was also back in the days of forums and fark more than on modern SNS
1·2 hours agoSince several years ago, Japan requires people of a certain age (75 IIRC) to take special classes to continue driving. I think there may be some other tests, but less sure on that. In the deep countryside, there isn’t always another option at any reasonable cost (especially to pensioners), which can create problems

In Japan, if you use a word wrong, people will almost certainly not tell you so as not to embarrass you unless your mistake is sufficiently more embarrassing or insulting.

I can’t find what this seems to be referencing anywhere on news sites nor Wikipedia’s controversy section for the games which has several other issues. Do you know what this refers to?
2·3 days agoAlready filled out my ballot and will be mailing it late next week once the national holidays are over in Japan.
I’m in my mid 40s and I dunno. I thought I had it. Now, my company that promised permanent remote work and confirmed my moving was fine, is trying to kill remote work. I live in very rural Japan and there aren’t many jobs out here. No US/Canada companies seem interested in working with a backend engineer on the other side of the world. I have back problems so there are also limits on what physical work I can do so something like construction is basically not an option. So, with my life more than half over, I might lose everything again. If I do, my life will just go to being completely over.
1·4 days agoI’m still designing and writing all code by hand. I don’t know that any of my coworkers are and know that many definitely are not. Our company does have copilot reviews built into CI and, at least for now, requires human review as well.
I don’t understand the question. What I meant was, if the sign says 30, most people are doing at lead 39-40 (some up to 49).
Definitely. If you’re not going the “customary” 10 over, people will often ride right on your ass everywhere I’ve driven in Japan.

I suppose the interpretation of “debate” here is important. I was thinking more of disagreeing and presenting facts to back up point rather than necessarily trying to attack or win something (though I did plenty of that in my younger days as well)
