Technology@lemmy.world•Stop bringing your phone in the shower: How steam can ruin 'waterproof' phonesEnglish
1·3 days agoThe rumor is that the whole iPhone concept was actually the idea of one unnamed engineer at apple who worked on it in his spare time; apparently he had the idea at the same time as the folks at IG, probably it was kind of a natural evolution of the earlier devices. (You have to consider that the thing that made the iPhone such a success, the “app store”, was not available from the beginning. The first devices had no official way of adding any software, but people quickly found hacks and added a debian-like package management to it. From there the first custom applications spawned and only then Apple understood the potential of opening the platform to third-party developers.)
Regarding the engineer, apparently he was fired by his supervisor for spending time on this “stupid” idea; but back in the day, Apple had the policy that everyone who was fired had to report to Jobs one last time, and then he showed him what he was working on and Jobs took it from there.
I am with Mimi on this one. I always held it like that and I am not gonna change.

Programming@programming.dev•DigitalOcean has $3 million for DHH and nothing for CSS-Tricks - keith.is
7·12 days agoIt is still enough for babbys first website/newsletter/blog etc. 128 MB is plenty for any personal website; you could probably even run a shop on that.
Our company’s website requires 5 MB storage and no database.

6·12 days agoJust put “free vps” or “free shell account” into a good search engine. For example: https://freeshell.de/services/
Or this is almost free (0.1 $ / month): https://tierhive.com/

6·12 days agoI never understood why anyone would host on DO, they were always much more expensive then the competitors.
Seriously, most people probably could get by with a free VPS or free shell account.
Never heard of CSS tricks; I tried to investigate in the posted article, but too much emojis.

Programming@programming.dev•Is Vibe Coding the Norm Now? [rant/vent/advice welcome]
52·13 days agoI am working in a very small company as a software dev and write everything by hand. I wrote some weeks ago in a different thread here that I tried all of the LLM powered coding tools and found all of them subpar.
If this company goes downhill or I lose the job otherwise, I will work something entirely different.
My very arrogant point of view is that these “vibecoding” tools are being celebrated by people who were making shit software before and now make software that is slightly less shit in what they perceive is the same amount of time, but I suspect it takes them actually longer. Meanwhile, they don’t grow their programming skills at all.

I don’t think that is true. For example, when it comes to cooking, I know a few hand-made non-seo pages that I frequent that have a nice selection and presentation of recipes. Those never come up in the search results, only the shit sites.
