  • It’s also worth noting that nearly nobody uses %appdata% that way anymore. It’s not even synced by default with enterprise OneDrive. And roaming documents folders need specific setup by your admin as well. Most don’t because it complicates shit. They’ll usually just give each user a dedicated private folder on a network drive and mount that at login, or they’ll be even lazier and use OneDrive to sync across devices without all the network drive hoops.

Also some programs, including some Microsoft developed ones, will install into %appdata% to bypass the need to have local admin rights to install for all users. On one hand it’s handy. On the other it makes blocking users from installing shit more of a pain. On the third hand it makes it real annoying to manage drive space when every goddamn user gets a separate Teams install by default.

  • I have a whole bunch of old towers I’ve accrued over the years, and family audio CD and DVD collections. Now hard drive space has become a premium for the backups, but I bought a whole bunch of powered SATA to USB adapters and a PCIe slot USB hub for my desktop. Had multiple CDs backing up at a time using every disk drive that still works. ExactRip, configure the drive, and then just swap out discs as needed while I worked from home.

Haven’t moved on to DVDs yet. CDs are easy, you just use ExactRip to rip to FLAC. Haven’t figured out a general use way for DVD ripping yet, especially because whether I want the special features backed up or not, or multiple audio streams, depends on the disc.

  • Rub it in why don’t you. :P

I had sporadic health issues earlier this year that weren’t consistent enough for FMLA and I’m down to 4 hours PTO. If I’m a good boy, I’ll gain maybe an hour a month.

Plus, the whole deal at my workplace was they acknowledged they paid under market rate in exchange for extra flexibility. Now we have new management who desperately doesn’t want to pay us for time on-call anymore, and doesn’t believe in time in-lieu (work after hours, get the equivalent off during business hours). I’m a full fledged systems engineer making under $90k. That’s a lot of money, but it sure as hell isn’t competitive for my skills, and more and more I’m wondering if it’s really worth what it’s costing me.

  • That’s something I see in my workplace even without AI, just with coding/scripting/automation.

It helps you do things faster. It doesn’t ensure you’re doing the right thing (unless you have someone skilled build in all the guardrails).

So many of my coworkers are at the “This chainsaw is amazing! I bet it would be great at driving nails!” level of scripting, and AI is only making them more reckless.
