It’s generally not good for your mental health to be obsessed with anything. Taken to its extreme, this tweet is describing a narcissist heroin addict.

Because perhaps a life isn’t supposed to be a project called ‘me,’ whose purpose it is to maximize my happiness.

Read Byung-Chul Han - the Burnout Society. This ‘inspirational quote’ encapsulates the problem of our times what he thinks is wrong with society today. Thinking like this can lead to enormous amounts of stress: what if you’re unhappy? Didn’t you try hard enough? You literally failed at life if you’re unhappy according to this logic.

They’re inconveniencing you. Most people would walk past you if you were downtrodden begging on the streets and judging by the amounts of homeless tents set on fire I don’t think they would skip yours.

Because that would spiral out of control and I’d end up in the grave. Neutral is the best i can achieve under normal/long term conditions.

If I’d only take my own happiness/enjoyment into consideration at obsessive levels, then I’d completely forget any long term consequences and probably do drugs until my heart gives out or i end up on the street or dead due to being irresponsible.

The fact that others depend on me functioning normally is the only reason i function normally. Not that this functioning is unhappy existence. It’s just limited and controlled through willpower. Without this control, id become the ultimate representation of living in the moment. There would be no past(SDAM) or the future(ADHD), just the random impulses the brain generates and this MF is untrustworthy POS.

I think obsessed is really the wrong word here. Sure, I care about making myself happy. Many of my choices are strongly informed by this. But I also know that I’m a social animal and I care a lot about my family and friends, so my happiness also passes through them. I will do less pleasant things to achieve their happiness and therefore mine.

    Because I’m not worth it?

I mean, do you praise a turd for stinking less than the pile of diarrhea next to it?

That’s the ethos/MO of everyone that enjoyed their time in the childrape Epstein island and parties so idk… You’re just one person, in a whole world full of people and natural wonders, do you really think a self-obsession is warranted? You’ll be selfish because everyone is, but you have to regulate that and give sometimes, and (in my understanding) the best among us is the one who gives more than what they take and is still happy at the end of the day.

Regardless, only through service (like being an integral part of your community, from the butcher and baker to the doctor and therapist; or being a good son or daughter/loving father or mother) do we truly feel happy and worthy of whatever good we have received, the rest is just hedonism and silly power games which are ultimately unfulfilling.

PS: I don’t even understand the whole “love yourself” angle. Like, why? How? Love is for the outside, you just need to understand yourself and work on yourself enough for you to like yourself as a person, to be at peace with who you are. The rest is dangerous vanity. And if you’re just a problem or a burden or out of control, why would you love or even like yourself?! You should hate who you have become with a passion, whilst having faith you can right your wrongs and change into a normal, prosocial person, so you can actually make progress.

set your own boundaries for what you’re willing to do and/or endure, and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for adhering to your own boundaries

Only insofar as my self-obsession affects others negatively. I have a real problem with people who are so into themselves that they willfully create problems for others and do so carelessly. It’s why I hate billionaires so much.
