It’s just looking at some basic information like “tags” that may appear in both unrelated games of different styles and genres. Example if a game shares 3 or more broad tags like “gore, violent, indie” then Steam will recommend games with such tags. Depends what is in your pool of played games as well.
For me the recommendations were: “GTA 4” and “Goat Simulator”

Which is fine I guess. I mean there is no need to start spoiling on the own shop for new players after 10 years. It’s actually quiet normal to not show everything what a game has to offer, so there is some secrets or progression to discover on their own. So even 20 years later its fine that the list of players is not full.

I don’t think YouTubers like markiplier have touched it in a decade. Granted, he’s been busy. But I still see it in my suggestions from other YouTubers now and again. Though way less than back in the day. GSP does them now and again still.
I rarely watched any of them back then, but I remember it felt like a whole year when the front page was only ever happy wheels.
