Had a mini panic attack while reading the second part.

Ah, the joys of unresolved childhood trauma caused by parents who hated each other

if you’re getting triggered based on memes. you might need to be seeing a therapist and resolving some that trauma.

i read this and laughed fondly and felt gratitude at how awesome my life is now compared to how I grew up. no more shitty food, no more shitty friends, no more shitty parents. and I get to play all the RPGs I want that everyone mocked me for when I was a kid.

We just go out and touch grass to avoid it. 50/50 chance we end up with an angry farmer chasing us in a field but we could run faster than him and his landrover couldn’t jump the fence.

I think the coolest difference to reflect on is the respect I felt as a kid in my poor friends homes and the disrespect I felt as a kid in my rich friends homes.

Rich parents see their kids as a burden to their peace. Sleepovers made it super apparent.

The more money you get, the more empathy you lose. This phenomenon has been studied, but not enough. Even if you started off poor, if you become rich you being to think you’re smarter and better than everyone else, even if you really only got rich because you were lucky, which is most rich people.

True. I do wonder if there’s not some element to it which works the other way round. Many rich people spend their excessive wealth in order to distance themselves from communities. Private mansions outside the city, yachts, private islands…

Now there’s also plenty of reasons for them to obscure their activities. Not only because some of them are morally abject but mostly because they can’t let anyone notice that they’re entirely unremarkable. But there must be something that makes isolation appealing to them and being an unremarkable part of a community seem horrible. Though maybe that’s just a learned trait under capitalism.

isolating is appealing because other people are hell.

the people in my ‘community’ are complete assholes when you invite them into your home. so you stop doing it. I don’t need an endless series of mini lectures about how ‘disappointing’ my choice of dishware is. i have no idea what the ‘quality’ of a dinner plate is, but my community is full of people who AGONIZE about this shit all day long.

I’d be more amendable to my community if it wasn’t full of incessantly nit picky weirdos who criticizes everything you own and everything you do and always tell you how you are doing it wrong or why you aren’t doing it like they would do it.

the few times i ever felt nice in a community was around people who just didn’t care about stupid bullshit. But… that never lasts very long, because the nitpickers always invade and start picking everything apart.

I’m not rich but I enjoy my isolation. While i live in town, I’m on 1.5 acres and it’s pretty dense with vegetation. No one can see my house from the road. It’s like having a little hideaway. I don’t really identify with the other people in my town. In fact, when I do interact with them I just come away depressed by how shallow they all seem.

I live in the US where rampant consumerism is the norm.

You mean switch the channel back and forth until it becomes unscrambled for a second. Then press the button or button combo on the remote in order to keep the unscrambled feed going. Then hit record on the vcr so you can tape over your least favorite cartoon tape.

It used to take prep work to get porn as a teen.

Doritos increased the intensity of their flavors and promoted it as Nacho Cheesier and Cooler Ranch flavors in the mid 1990’s. At some point, the flavor names changed back to Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch. Wikipedia mentions the recipe change in 1994 but not the name change.

So I’d place that bag design at around 1995.

That’s C-3PO on there, so it’s probably 1997-1999 (Special Edition was 1997, Phantom Menace was 1999).

Yeah, Crystal Pepsi was discontinued in 1994, but Star Wars Special Edition (see C-3PO on the Doritos bag) was released in 1997, so this is weird.

Edit to add: I was curious, so I looked up the history of the Mountain Dew logo. They connected the “T” and the “A” in 1996, which honestly makes this all a little bit weirder.

Thankfully I never had to deal with that! While friends were around. My parents knew how to wear the “we’re a perfectly happy family” mask

This reminds me of that 4chan story where someone joked that their friend’s mom was a whore. Then turns out their mom worked in the field. And there was a film shot 9 months before his birthday

Imagine being the son of a president and finding out your mother was a paid escort and your father participated in multiple sex trafficking rings.
