Dear Government. Quit trying to turn the Internet into 1980s cable TV. There’s a lot of us out here using it for its original purpose instead shopping and watching Netflix.
So employees that use a company VPN to access company files between offices are now breaking the law?
What about personal vpns that people setup to access their home devices, like a smart home setup or home security camera? Illegal as well?
Step 1: rent a $5 VPS anywhere outside of us government control.
Step 2: set up a multi-hop tunnel through said VPS using glutun and wireguard.
You are now immune to this bullshit.

avg comes with one. pita, sometimes it turns it on when i don’t want to use it. I used to mess around with it because I got avg because my phone kept getting hacked and I was like this thing comes with a vpn!!! whaaaaaaat but tbh I have no use for t so I don’t even use it.
ngl though, if i went out of the country and needed to access paypal instead of using zelle, id use it, other than that, it’s annoying when i do a virus scan and it gets turned on after.

They can be found for less than $20 a month. They’re on par with 1-2 streaming services you can drop.
For some people that really need that, even less than one dollar is too much. $20 is basically matter of life or death.
I know, a VPS is nothing and running wireguard in a docker container takes 3 minutes.
You can build a psuedo VPN with as little as ssh + squid on a VPS. Tunnel your web traffic over ssh to a proxy on the VPS.
Not enforceable, what will they do about offshore VPNs? Many major VPN companies are already based outside of the US

In the spirit of what they’re trying to do, I worry they’ll modify the law “ISPs are required to do state-full inspection of all traffic and block anything questionable.”
You might say, that’s not doable, what about SSL? ISP’s enforce a MITM cert. Bluecoat has devices that have done this for years. Essentially dismantle internet security altogether. HSTS? Not if the feds so no. If they’re mandated by law the ISPs would comply and we’d not be left with any other opportunity.
But what if it’s encrypted below that level? Easy, Block. If your business needs VPN, they register their endpoint and provide backdoor keys/logs.
We’re not there. Not by a long shot, but we’re heading that way and they’re pumping the gas as hard as they can.
None of this privacy we’re enjoying is durable. Pushes in the US, UK, AUS and other places are trying to dismantle it.
If we don’t put up a fight, we’d better start working a fuck of a lot harder on radio meshes.

I guess we’ll instead try prohibiting VPNs, when something is in demand… prohibiting it always works great with zero unintended consequences.
When you only needed Netflix. Not Netflix, Hulu, Disney, HBO, Paramount, peacock, starz, apple, Amazon prime… I mean, I think most of us are fine paying for content. But, streaming has become at least as expensive as cable used to be.
Other P2P networks too.

Can’t wait for this to get applied to every corporate site-to-site VPN, every remote worker, etc. My employer relies heavily on VPN services provided by AWS. I’d be willing to bet the number of corporate users of AWS VPN users would be enough to qualify for this.
These “small government conservatives” have been spineless for so long, it’s hard to remember anyone ever made the claim!
