I guess there’s two ways you can interpret this meme.
One is: this guy is a superhero because he defended himself with a jar rather than a gun.
The other is: when guns aren’t generally available violent attacks are less lethal.
Some of our policing problems in the US are related. You don’t need to be half as reactive if there’s few if any guns in public circulation. We had an involuntary patient get dropped off recently by the usual cops but this time they also had a community mental health worker with them (who was wearing a kevlar vest labeled “mental health worker” btw).
I told her I could never do what she does because I love my violent asshole babies but I could never care for them outside of my meticulously controlled violent asshole playpen and she was like “oh yeah I could never do this without him” (points at the cop). There’s a lot that needs to change about policing in the US but some of it isn’t changeable without addressing some of the underlying violence problems (like random guns everywhere with minimal safeguards against misuse).
Problem is you could take guns away tomorrow and the police would never let the leash up. Cat’s out of the bag. The police would never give up guns. And they certainly aren’t going to stop hiring a certain type of personality to become police officers.
And even in places like South Korea where citizens can’t own guns the police still carry guns and are known to have police brutality issues.
There is a cop mentality problem no matter what.
But I do agree with the fact that thinking every backpack, pocket or center console could have a gun makes for a certain type of policing to respond to that. You’re right about that. (The kevlar vest saying Mental Health Worker sent me btw)
I just don’t know how you solve that at this point though because where I live guns are everywhere. everywhere so even if you outlaw them tomorrow all that’s going to happen is you have a can of instant coffee or whatever to defend yourself and your family with and you get shot and killed by the criminal who will still have an easy to obtain gun.
There’s right around 500 million guns in the USA and many of them aren’t registered. Lots of States don’t even require you to register them at all “constitutional carry” and whatnot.
In 2017 when the USA only had 393 million firearms that was known to be 46% of the entire world’s civilian owned guns at the time. (Now much much higher)
They can’t even control the drugs. USA has one of the most insane brutal policing forces they use in the “war on drugs” and drug usage still goes up year over year even after you take into account deaths from overdoses.
That same government is supposed to take care of the gun problem? It will create a scenario where every single criminal who wants a gun will have one but you won’t have one or legally be allowed to use one.
There is a cop mentality problem no matter what.
In the UK the police are firmly against being generally armed, as they understand that would raise the stakes in every confrontation, and we don’t have many guns in circulation at present. They’re no angels, but they’ve got the right idea on this at least, and they do have armed units they can call in when the situation absolutely demands it.
The situation in the US is very different though, as you say. Once you have that many guns in circulation, and a widespread mentality that accepts or even demands that, getting back to something sane is going to be a herculean task over multiple generations.
Or, bear with me a minute. We take all the guns and put them on an island and everyone who wants a gun goes there to claim them. Then there is a real life PUBG and whoever wins gets all the guns but must stay on the island. Everyone wins and we eliminate all those who “need” guns and they get to fulfill their violent fantasies. It is a win win.
If I was that brand, I would make an over the top commercial of someone using it to fend off a carjacker, then at the end hit them with a “Based on a true story”.

Honestly, I feel bad throwing them away. I have a collection of about 30 of them because I feel like I should be able to find a use for them, or at lease someone should. I stopped saving them.
