Celebrate holidays. Cool, it’s halloween, eh I’ll eat a couple pieces of candy. Cool, it’s christmas, let me chug down at least some egg nog. I just can’t get into the habit of decorating because to me, it’s just more work.

To OP: Decorate, but for a different holiday for each room in your house. And leave them up all year. Tell people who ask to mind their own business, you’ll have Thanksgiving in the bathroom if you want!

To answer the question: Everything. Jesus … everything.

Doing the dishes, vacuuming, washing my car, mowing the lawn … Pretty much any task that I can’t just do once and be over with. Feels pointless to do stuff that I’ll just need to do again in a few weeks or so.

I feel that. Especially when cleaning the apartment around. Dust is infectious on every surface, it’ll come back within the week and just build again from where it left off. It’s just tiring to have to deal with that on a constant basis while wasting money on cleaning products that promise it’ll get rid of it for prolonged periods of time.

And when shit has hair around? That’s even more annoying. I get plastic utensils, plastic plates/bowls and paper plates to reserve myself from having to clean so much. I reserve actual dish washing to a dishwasher to spare myself.

Same here, to a certain degree. I do it as soon as I come from work so I can “reward myself” with rest/cuddling/videogames after. I’m also a bit of a maniac regarding tidiness so I guess that helps. 🤷‍♂️

Celebrate my birthday. It usually comes at a time of year that I have a lot going on. Then it comes to me not planning anything for it, then everyone wishing me a happy birthday and immediately asking what I’m doing for my birthday, which is nothing. I also don’t emote well to people giving me gifts or imposing a celebration on me, which also makes it stressful.

clean the dang house. Ugh. I live in a pig sty. It would take so little effort to keep on top of it; it’s not a big place and there’s no kids running around messing everything up. But every time I think to clean, I just plop down on the couch. 😭

Same, from time to time I get fed up with it and clean in the end. Or when I get motivation to cook something I clean before hand but not after.

Sucks that I’m mostly not even in a mood to do stuff I love to do.

    walking the dog.

even with a podcast or video or music in my ears, it’s so tedious, or it’s dealing with other dogs along the walk, or our dog wants to stop and sniff instead of staying at a constant pace. and I let him do this, dogs experience the world primarily through scent so it’s really good for him to be able to. it just feels to my brain like the progress of the walk gets halted whenever he stops to sniff. even when I know fully well that the mental stimulation he gets from sniffing around is just as important (and nearly as tiring) as the physical exercise.

    You can just…not?

I love Halloween so I decorate, but we’re not religious so we don’t celebrate most holidays. I guess you could say I don’t do it because I’m tired? Tired of doing rituals I don’t enjoy that have no meaning to us.

We have our own traditions that we look forward to, so it’s not a life without joy and wonder. It just looks different!

This, and we did it a lot when we had kids at home, decorating for every holidays even if we are not religious. Now that our chlidren are adult 25yo+ and all work and have their family/appartment/life/etc we just don’t decorate anymore. For christmas we make a simple small tree and that’s it.

In-law cookouts. Not sure what it is about them but it’s a bit exhausting talking with so many people and the constant code-switching is tiresome bro

Edit: Thinking more on it, just about any situation where I’m inclined to code switch is tiresome

I miss having a social space where I didn’t have to talk in code. I used to have a few, but they got invaded by the upper middle class corporate speech police. So I just quit because it was so miserable to be around people like that.

I remember especially being lectured about saying “I suck at this but I’m always getting better” is ‘problematic and negative speech.’ God, what awful twats those folks are.

I have a very “religious” auntie in law which kinda forces me to perform, and I find it exhausting. I never had to before I got married cause my mom and I are very honest and the rest of my family just has to deal with it/me, but eh, the things we do for love, right? At least my MIL and I are on the same wavelength, or at least enough not to warrant any crazy code switching. 🙏

Code-switching is a linguistic tool. In short you change the way you present speech to better communicate with specific audiences. Easiest example is when you swap from a casual tone that might include slang with your friends to a “professional” or formal tone when talking with your employer.

I’ve never heard that term before, even though it’s pretty much how I’ve survived as long as I have. I always just called it Chameleon, and I think I must be pretty good at it, because I can see how bad other people are at it.

I worked in sales for 10 years or so, and honestly, I was a shit salesman. (I had a job to do, but I NEVER wanted to pull any shady shit) But, I was good at mimicking the people who were in front of me. I became a bro when the frat boys walked in, I was a polite young man when the church crowd showed up. I grew customers by being whoever they wanted me to be, and just being helpful.

I know it’s a me thing, and Im glad everyone enjoys their traditions. Keep it up and enjoy!

But I just don’t get it. Decorate so you can tear it down in a week. Waste money on feasts and decor and gifts that nobody wanted to begin with. I just can’t get into it. Seems foolish and wasteful.

For me, I’m trying to decouple two elements: I hate the wastefulness, but I like (some) decoration.

Decorating builds anticipation and for me it’s a big part of the holiday itself. I both enjoy decorating and looking at the decorations. So I’ve strived to decorate with as little waste as possible. I create a lot of decorations myself, reuse the same ones year over year, prefer paper and cardboard over plastic. Next step is food decor! That’s also why I like carving pumpkins: a low-waste fun decor option.

I haven’t found a solution to cheap useless gifts yet… mostly because I’m not in control of what others gift me. On my side, I try gifting consumables and/or handcrafted things. Everybody likes a batch of homemade cookies

on gifting I sorta hate the reciprical thing. When I do do it I like to do it anonymously. Just because I got you something does not mean you need to get me something. kinda defeats the idea of a gift.

    mostly socialize.

i keep trying but basically I haven’t had an enjoyable conversation in probably 6 years.

I’m kind of sick of just repeatedly hearing about other people’s problems and them getting pissed off at me because I can’t genuinely relate to them, at best I can just kind of fake it. I also don’t subscribe to doomerism, which is basically all anyone wants to talk about apart from their personal problems.

I would like to be able to talk about movies or books or something. Feels like that type of conversation disappeared post pandemic. If I try to bring it up people just lecture me how they have no time for that and I need a second job if I have time for it.

I miss having constructive and interest conversations about non-personal things. Even online it is increasingly hard to find this stuff because it’s just buried by the overwhelming mountain of lifestyle/wellness crap and product promotion, or political/social/celebrity gossip nonsense. And the format of those things is always someone weird condescending lecture or trying to make you anxious/insecure so you will buy their product… and so many people I know have internalized this mentality. And they act like you’re the asshole if you aren’t 'worried about toxins, you aren’t chasing the latest fitness trend, or you aren’t trying ‘hack’ life for more ‘productivity’.

I would like to meet someone who is like ‘oh cool you like to do X? what about it do you like?’ etc. But I don’t meet anyone who ever engages in this way anymore, and I notice when I try to engage people that way they get really weirded out, like taking an interest in them is offensive. or they will immediately change the topic to some personal issue they want to bitch about and ask me for advice on… even when I’m a complete stranger. like, why are you asking some random dude at a bar for career/family/health advice? and getting angry when he doesn’t have some bullshit answer? so bizarre.

do you ever go to the specific communities around a topic? I mean im totally doomer but when on the anime, movie, book, game, etc. communities usually im just talking about shows. granted I do bitch about how I feel like shows and movies sorta suck in the last several years but you know I will sometimes say. oh that was not bad. or I saw X and recommend. just mentioned primal in one as being decent.

I am the lead developer of one of the software packages we support. My main client has their own clients. They are generally nice and warm people, and we have a good relation. However, during our weekly meetings it feels like they are using a rusty rake to scratch my open nerves. Those meetings are drawn out, minute, irrelevant details are discussed and I have to answer the same basic question at least once a month, even if they have been using the software over ten years now.

It is the weekday I dread the most.
