He was maybe one step above being a nobody before they started boosting him. Far right online influence campaigns are definitely effective when they target terminally online progressives, but this is like trying to go the other direction and trying convince my mom that Hasan Piker is coming for her Subaru, which is definitely not going to land, because my mother doesn’t use reddit.

The GOP seem to need someone to do their thinking for them and tell them what their positions should be. I don’t need a streamer to tell me how to think progressively.

A streamer who was directly campaigning with DSA candidates and promoting them to their audience. Everyone always seem to leave that part out in Hasan discourse for some reason. To say he’s just a streamer is like saying Jon Stewart is just a comedian or Joe Rogan is just a podcaster. He has pulled back heavily though after he flew too close to the sun and actually hurt a candidate race that should be a sweep for the democrats like everywhere else.

Hasan hits too close to home for you so you have to resort to zionist talking points.

It’s almost funny because people got all excited about how the Internet would democratize media. And then it did. And it’s kinda shit.

Is it better than the corporate media landscape of yesteryear? I think it’s debatable.

On the one hand, more underrepresented voices are platformed. On the other, any narcissistic asshole can achieve demagogue status and the rich assholes from before have many more strings they can pull.

It’s reaching (reached?) the burn-it-all-down-and-start-over point.

We are still in the growing pains stage of that democratization IMO. Media literacy hasn’t quite kept up so we’re worshiping unqualified nobodies because that’s what’s available. Real expertise and academic authority hasn’t really had much incentive to move to social media until very recently because old media and walled gardens are still lucrative. It will hit an equilibrium eventually though, and not just with the quality of content available, but people will learn to navigate misinformation better.

I know people really hate AI around here, but one of the things it’s doing is forcing us to re-learn some things about information chain of custody social media broke over the past decade.

On the other other hand, it’s still corporatized media, just with a more hidden incentive structure.

        Uhhhh…

It didn’t tho, at least not talking about nepo baby twitch streamers who were handed a platform on their uncles network named after the perpatraters of the Armenian genocide…

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Turks#Armenian_genocide

It’s not like America picked this guy out nowhere, he had a literal media company behind him and generational wealth.

It’s like how Taylor Swift didn’t get famous because of talent, her parents were loaded and had connections in the industry. She didn’t need a record deal, her parent just bankrolled an album.

That’s a huge barrier to entry removed, so judging nepo babies like average people never makes sense. It’s already at the point today where you have to be wealthy to take off in entertainment.

The irony is Piker’s schtick is hes supposed to be a “man of the people” when all he cares about his own views and bank account.

    Yah, no kidding.

If a random podcaster matters so much, let’s talk about the huge stable of nuts that are on the right wing, starting with Nick Fuentes.

When the right wing or the Murc’s Law Media get to wringing their hands about how “radical” the Democrats are and to make them answer for every lefty podcaster in existence, I want an explanation for donnie having dinner with Fuentes.

Neoliberals want him to matter just as much…

They want to sticl problematic streamers like Piker to every progressive so that instead of talking about progressive policy, they can just make candidates defend a fucking twitch streamer using the candidate for views.

That’s why the republicans, neoliberals, and billionaire owned media won’t shut the fuck up about this douche.

The obsession people have with this twitch streamer is downright creepy. I wonder, how much do these people just lurk in his chat feed? It’s weird.

Also, “bad faith actor”…? I’ll bet money I have more evidence he’s a dog shocker than you have I’m a, “bad faith actor” — whatever that means.

Lemmy wants to think it’s informed…

But I noticed a lot of people just repeat the same things that have been true for 30 years, which would have been fine if the faction who were the problem that entire time hadn’t lost control of the party after the last presidential.

People aren’t really informed here, they mostly just repeat whatever they heard someone say. Which explains why they blindly follow streamers/influencers.

They just want the dopamine hit of tribalism without actually trying to fix anything

Typical centrist genocide supporter delusion. They attack progressives and people who promote progressives, and when those progressives win, they always claim that they are the reason why the progressives won.

I find Hassan analysis very weak but the claim that he is not influential is so laughable

Elections were supposed to be an education population making an educated decision on who should lead…it’s not that. It’s now a popularity contest, and it’s treated like a slightly more serious American Idol. Shit like this is farming popularity contest bullshit, not leadership ideas.

No. Being subject to the authority of the State is what entitles a citizen to vote. Any other standard to qualify a voter is voter suppression and anti-democratic. What you’re talking about is Voter ID, Pole Taxes, and Literacy Tests.

That’s a poor assumption about what I meant; I believe the original framework was a charter that we should be educating our population; the baseline should be an assumption that every citizen has access to education, particularly after civil rights. I think you read my statement to mean “only the educated should vote”, but what I intended was “It’s a travesty that our society allowed education to lapse as a priority, due to conservative attacks, and the result is that snappy headlines and memes carry more weight than policy goals.”
