Literally just stumbled upon it while trying to see if the PeerTube app had any recent updates. View-Verse has apps on both iOS and Android. The iOS app says no data collected.

Don’t know much about it beyond that so far, but the more options we have to get away from the big corporations the better, so I figured I’d share.

Owned by LibertyMediaLLC, who also runs Liberty-Social, which asks for account creation/login instead of showing anything, though the description sounds like facebook.

Not fond of shorts being on the front page no matter which category you click.

Dunno, but any of these “free speech” platforms always feel like havens for eventual racists, bigots and worse to thrive, though view-verse is currently very empty, so it might not end up as another cesspool.

I just assume anything with “Freedom”, “Liberty”, “Patriot”, etc. in the name are grifters trying to scam and/or datamine MAGA. “Libre” I think is still safe because it sounds too European.

      brief search interlude

aaaaand LibertyMediaLLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Media Corporation, a sprawling corporate holding company that is 49% owned by one John C. Malone, Atlanta Braves owner, Trump Inaugural Committee (round 1) donor and onetime largest individual landowner in the US.

      …yup, that tracks.

UPDATE: I based the above off the parent comment, but view-verse lists its parent company as “Liberty Social Media LLC”, not “LibertyMediaLLC”. The former is much harder to pin down, the contact information on the google app is “Liberty Smith” and the dev site is a generic vibe-coding-looking website hosted on base44, so it may not be under LMC, just riding its coattails. Still, would not trust.

My bad, didn’t notice that screw up.

To add to the cherry of “totally trustyworthy, you guys”, liberty social media has this corporate email on their about page: [email protected].

Stripe as in the payment processor? Not really surprised, seeing how this view-verse and the facebook-market-thing are focused on taking money out of the person

YouTube is starting (already has really) to become an echo chamber catered to those with DMCA rights, and trolls pretending that they do. We need a P2P community run video platform, archive.org’s torrent platform would be a decent backend but they are also starting to kneel to certain groups too.

I should probably upload some copyrighted music videos to view-verse and check how long it takes for them to be taken down. Might take quite a while, given that no “full” video has reached 20 views and no short is past 150 views.

maybe you could join and contribute non-slop

edit: not checking the replies for my sanity but i see the downvotes and like. you know content doesn’t just magically appear. right. like real actual human beings have to make an account and upload content for there to be human content. that’s how social media works. making a platform does not automatically mean it comes with content. shocking, i know.

just from skimming i saw maybe two usernames. would be cool if they didn’t post slop but if they did reposts y’all would probably complain about that too (although i saw what could’ve been reposts maybe) and if they posted original content that wasn’t interesting enough you’d probably also complain

if you know how to code then idk. contribute to something like peertube or make your own thing.

or you could just keep funding the slop corporation spying on you and sending your money to child-bombing pedos and your watch history to palantir. it’s fine we all have our preferences. i just assumed people on the fediverse might have values more aligned with not that.

i know it sucks to hear, but if you want things to change you actually have to put the effort in. womp womp

don’t let perfection be the enemy of progress. unless you intend to make a perfect platform with the most engaging original free content. you can do it. i believe

Why is it us that has to put effort to outpace the AI slop, considering that AI slopper put literally no effort into the thing they churn out? For every video being uploaded there will be literally hundreds of AI slop being put out. If the platform welcome AI slop then it’s no better than slop corporations that you’re so up against.

You are severely missing what YouTube is for. The vast majority of people, probably significantly more than 99%, just go there to watch stuff. Very few ever make videos.

So yes, for almost everyone, content just magically appears there. Because of how many people use the site, that still means a very large (absolute) number of people make very diverse content. YouTube is excellent in figuring out what I want to see. Think of it like TV with the ability to comment, and having more variety and being on-demand and custom-tailored to my personal taste and interest. If there’s nothing I like on tv, I turn off the tv. I don’t start a broadcasting company.

In other words: me making content I want to watch doesn’t solve me wanting to watch something, and if I made it I already know it and it isn’t for me.

What makes YouTube worth visiting isn’t the site itself or how it was coded. But for the people that are on it. That makes it so hard if not impossible for alternatives to ever appear and be viable. You need the people for the site to be good, but people don’t come unless the site is good. The is no likely solution to this, not now, not soon, maybe not ever.

I feel like this is very much still relevant here: https://youtu.be/r3snVCRo_bI

The gist of it is that platforms owned by for profit entities are inherently hostile, and that any competitor to YouTube, in the extremely unlikely case they find success, is bound to develop the same problems, since they are systemic.

Our only chance for a non-hostile video platform is peer tube with federated hosting.
