Millenials, who are at most 45 years old, should magically retire from the shitty world they grew up in. That’s ragebait because I can’t believe someone is so dumb to think like that.
Also, yeah, retire 22 years early without enough money to live on in a system with almost zero safety nets (and cons trying to actively dismantle them), because someone just entered the workforce and found life has a lot of sharp edges.
Well, as Gen X, I’ve been noticing quite a lot of this kind of ragebait in recent years. Most of it seems to be framed as coming from Gen Y, directed at boomers, but that’s not the only kind of ageism on the loose…
Kinda weird though. After being ignored for decades. By generations before and after. We’re a problem now? Nice to be remembered I guess.
I’m not sure we were exactly ignored. A lot of people that are younger lump us in with boomers (lol) and boomers would often lump us in with Gen Y…
Exactly. Kinda like we don’t normally exist.
There are genuinely Gen Z types who believe that anyone born before the year 2000 is old. Their perceptions of age seem to be a lot stricter than previous generations.
You’re underestimating the entitlement of Genzee.
Bro the oldest millennials are like 42

Hello!
Younger generations tend to get this kind of thing wrong, I’ve noticed. Sometimes cultural references are wildly wrong.
I saw some younger actress (?) on Jimmy Kimmel I think it was and she was referencing something obviously 80s-related, and then said something about “millennials”. Oof. That’s Peak Gen X stuff.
Jimmy didn’t comment on it, but he had to be thinking, WTF.
Yeah, I’ve noticed “millennials” is just the new “old people” to young Gen Z and Alpha.
Ha. I have a feeling that “boomers” went through the same arc. Probably more ink spilled about them than just about any other generation (Gen Y will probably come close - it’s just a numbers game, not any special property of any of these age demographics - Gen X is treated like the middle child just because we have lower numbers ), and how wayward they were as the 60’s generation/flower power generation, etc.
Over time though, “boomer” morphed into just another way of expressing ageism at older people instead of “the kids”.
Have you read all the shit boomers wrote about millennials? Nothing has ever not been our fault. I remember in high school getting blamed for ending newspapers because we were more interested in the internet.
I remember boomers saying and writing all kinds of stupid shit about Gen X.
Later the MSM chased the numbers and set up the cage match to be between boomers and Gen Y instead. Most of it seemed to be a lot of rehashed stuff we already heard as kids from people our parents age (if they were reactionary dumbasses; not all boomers of course - quite a few boomers were very awesome including my own parents). Including the internet thing, since many of Gen X cut their teeth on things like BBS and USENET and were founding all the dot com shit…
Craig and his list probably played a huge role in the demise of newspapers…ironically, he’s a boomer.
Same with people like Stuart Brand - boomer, and I looked up to him. It’s hilarious to hear boomers blaming Gen X or anyone younger for “internet bad”, LOL.
I know right… I’m smack in the middle of Gen Z and I’m probably not retiring for another 10 years.
Sorry we’re doing class war, fuck off with this generational in-fighting
Billionaires are the problem, clear and simple
Millenials retire?! Even Gen Xers aren’t old enough to retire yet (the oldest ones still have 6 years to go)! Even some boomers aren’t old enough to retire yet.
Yeah, I figure the ragebait over having 20-somethings demand that politicians all just retire if they are over some arbitrary age (regardless of their position on, you know, the issues. Or their efficacy or anything like that, no, we need magical “term limits” and/or some age limit jammed down our throats instead of actually letting voters decide) was not enough to fling into the “national conversation”; the authors of this article and their outlet needed to involve everyone else in the ageist ragebait.
This is indeed eye-poppingly stupid, but I think the people they quoted have no idea what the age range of Gen Y even is. Also, maybe they do, but people very young often think anyone older than about 30 is “old”, so…shrug?
So why term limits on the president? Let voters decide. There should be term limits for senators but surprise they voted that down when they voted for the presidential term limits.
What do you imagine term limits would do for senators?
It’s not working all that well for Presidents, BTW. Given how popular Obama and Clinton both were, they might have had 3rd, 4th or even more terms instead of shitstains like W and donnie.
Lol I read this exact article 30 yrs ago about my “boomer” parents.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Sincerely the generation they always forget in these dumb fuck articles
Yep. Boomers were saying the same thing when they entered the workforce (hell, it’s probably been captured in a few movies and shows). I think it tends revolve mostly around how large a give age demo is, as to how much this gets catered to by the culture. Gen X had similar sentiments, but we were mostly told to shut up and/or ignored by the media.
I’d hear this kind of thing in my twenties - bitching about boomers was an OG X thing, but appropriated by Gen Y - Gen X would grumble that all the boomers were choking off all the jobs, including the entry-level ones.
But I thought it was stupid then, too - do people in their twenties really expect to only have people in their 20s and 30s in the workforce or something? As people generally start to live longer, I’d not be surprised at all to be working with people from late teens all the way even into the 80s. Maybe even further if healthspans get extended.
I mean, if we hit some kind of abundance inflection point where everyone only works as much as they want in some kind of endless creative utopia, and everyone is getting a UBI to have all their needs met and then some, I’m all for dropping out. Until then, the way our system works, people pretty much need to work from adolescence to at least 67 just in order to eat and have basic healthcare. But probably past that age, too. Obviously that is going to span more than one artificially-constructed “generation”.
GenZ are far closer in mentality to millennials. I say that as an elder millennial (Xennial actually). Younger millennials have all the same issues as Z. But honestly, it’s the billionaires who cause this fighting, not generations. Focus should be on where the real problem is.
That’s the reality of the situation. People can try to blame Republicans for how they voted or how boomers write and vote for legislation but it’s billionaires who have been pulling all these strings to get us to fight each other in the first place.
I see this week’s “Platforming the two dumbest motherfuckers we could find on Twitter/TikTok and pretending it’s a social phenomenon” article has arrived
lol trust me, I would if I fuckin could. Sick of this shit.
Gen X and I can’t afford to retire. But hey, the article got me doing math and it blows my mind that there are 46-year-old millennials out there (if you accept the definition as 1980 and say 1980-01-01 counts).
X and I’ll never be able to retire. Wives and kids are expensive. Some day I’ll die and finally rest. I’m not trying to rush it, but I certainly don’t fear death as I once used to.
I’m Gen X, too - I’ve had to take others aside (boomers and Gen X) and whisper something to them about how old Gen Y is, and that started even ten plus years ago. What they were calling a “millennial” was probably Gen Z.
For a while there “millennial” became shorthand for “someone younger than me”, kind of like “boomer” now seems to be (hilariously) aimed at “someone older than me”.
But what I’ll never forget is when some boomer called me a millennial. That was, as we used to say, radical.
I wonder how many in Gen Y have been called “boomer”.
I feel like they’ve moved the goalposts a lot on millennials. Gen X has always been ~1965-1979 or 1980. Then we had Gen Y. I can now see how Y became Y2K which became Millennial, but at some point we were calling kids born with a 20- instead of a 19- in their birth year “millennials” (as in, they were born in the new millennium). I think what ultimately happened was, Gen Y basically said “no we get that claim because Y → Y2K → Millennial”, and we all just agreed. Now 1980-1999 is millennials and 2000-2019 is Gen Z… as I understand it.
Thing is, generations are like astrology, there’s no real scientific basis behind it, especially when people display traits from multiple generations.
The boomer thing reminds me of “boomer shooter” which means like DOOM. I guess it was Boomers who made them… Not sure. But they were played by our generation. Boomers didn’t have shooters. Boomers weren’t raised on video games and most of them don’t understand video games.
Thing is, generations are like astrology, there’s no real scientific basis behind it, especially when people display traits from multiple generations.
This is the thing. The Adam Ruins Everything guy did a great takedown on the notion of “generations”. Bears (re)watching when people have internalized marketing strategies a bit too much.

Gen X has always been ~1965-1979 or 1980.
It’s interesting that the guy that ended up naming Gen X is actually from Generation Jones and the book best described people in that age range, TBH.
It never seems to come up much, but Generation Jones is a group that has even more erasure than Gen X. :) But then microgenerations don’t seem to be something most people adopt in their everyday language… https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/forget-boomers-and-millennials-we-actually-belong-to-8-micro-generations/91033196
To your point about games, it’s interesting how some tech influences this guys’ choices for microgeneration breakdowns.
Oh. It’s “viral TikTok’s”.
Yeah. That’s a great source for what millions of people are thinking.
(Also, 45 isn’t exactly retirement age, so this feels more like the tiktoker in question is being paid to stir shit.)
So an untalented hack wrote a puff-piece about an algorithmically amplified bit of rage-bait from a small group of young people who can’t do math or define “Millennial” running their mouths on TikTok, to try to provoke some kind of pissing contest and somehow this counts as Politics? This Millennial is not taking the bait nor should anyone else. Gen Z doesn’t want our jobs. They want jobs that pay money. And so do we. Anyone amplifying this nonsense is helping the people with a cookie factory convince the guys with a half a cookie, that the guys with a crumb of a cookie are trying to “Take our Jobs” for the entertainment of watching us fight.
Get a grip, we’ve been watching this for decades. Stop letting them play you.
Edit: autocorrect
I agree in part, and disagree in part. It is divisive nonsense, and it’s also politics. I’m not sure how widespread this sentiment is, but the fact that it’s being amplified on tiktok at all is newsworthy in and of itself, I think. We need to align ourselves against this kind of wedge driving, and to do that we need to know that it’s happening. If twenty-somethings are seeing this kind of content and I’m missing it, I’d rather rebut it than ignore it on the basis of it being ridiculous. I’ll continue to do so until it stops happening, so… presumably for the rest of my life. So be it.
As hard as things have been for me, I believe they are worse for my younger friends. These kinds of stories should be named and shamed as the distraction bullshit they are. That’s how minds get changed, not by withdrawing into news cliques where we only see news we agree with.
Don’t you think I’d retire if I could?
Boomer here, and I’d love to retire. Hopefully I can afford to in a few years.
Bad news kids, we’re all working til we drop at this point.
Kaleb, @ys0ser10us on TikTok, talked about the issue in a video that also made waves on the platform. “How is Gen-Z supposed to climb the corporate ladder if Boomers and Millennials won’t retire?” he asked.
Gen-X being ignored again, just the way we like it. We were the last feral generation, whose moms kicked us out of the house on most Summer mornings and expected us to entertain ourselves until dinnertime.
Gen X erasure is real.
