Scratching our horse has a tendency to prompt her to scratch back. We’ve more or less taught her to just do that with her lip (seriously, horse lips are flexible and strong enough to do that just fine) rather than her teeth like she would with other horses, but sometimes, those habits slip back in…

So she sometimes wonders why we tell her off when she just wants to return the favour. I always feel bad, but I’d rather not have her rip holes in my clothes (nor skin, for that matter).

My dog has a special way where she makes me feel like an asshole. She’ll be chewing on a toy all by herself and I’ll grab it and throw it and she just… Looks at me. Like I stole a childhood memory from her. She doesn’t have any drive to go get it half the time so I go grab it, give it back, and apologize. Prissy little shit, I love her to death.

He probably likes that. Knowing someone is watching over him, means it is safe to do his business.

My cat will occasionally attempt to reach out and pet my hair. Sometimes he’ll sit there and bat at my fringe, but that just might be a cat being a cat.

Actually there’s a behavioral issue that comes up with this, I think-- the idea that dogs amongst themselves will use ‘holding’ and similar behaviors to establish dominance over another dog.

Some owners have gotten bitten from trying to go too fast with that stuff, I’ve heard. Moreso adopting older dogs, much less with puppies.

Yeah, it gets worse in abused dogs too. How do I know? I hugged my aunts rescue as a young child, then got blamed for “doing something” that made the dog attack me.

Also I think every dog is different, and Ive dealt with many. When someone says you shouldnt play fight with a dog, and another says it’s fine… They both can be right. It’s about the personality of the dog not a 1 stop shop answer that will properly raise a dog. So just like a cat, needs to learn how to play with withdrawn claws while play fighting, a dog needs to know similar. Does that mean every dog can learn that? Possibly not. I always hope so and want to think the owners are at fault but I don’t know that is always true. Some animals (people are animals) make decisions that we won’t appreciate no matter how they were raised.

No one tells Fred to shoot someone, yet Fred does. There will be dogs that are like Fred just like there are dogs that are like Damian who is a pacifist and will emotionally hurt for someone because he saw them slip on ice.

Are all cats and dogs safe to keep infants around, no. (Same with people). Are most cats dogs and humans decent around each other when treated correctly… Yes.

We need to be fluid in our understanding of one anothers needs to be able to trust and communicate properly. Cats and dogs communicate. They don’t need to speak your language, but if they speak… we should listen just like any person. Else we are surprised

Essentially your arguing a black man is more likely to kill someone…

I find that an absolutely batshit take based on what I mentioned. In reality, dog breeds are a considerably different situation, with centuries of rudimentary-level genetic engineering involved in order to create a range of dogs with specialized characteristics and behaviors.

Of course not every dog in that breed is going to have exactly the same personality, but the point is that different breeds will have considerably different temperaments exactly due to what what humans wanted from that line of dogs.

Nah fuck that. Some are bred to be killers, some are bed to be fucking miserable genetic abominations. This isn’t fucking dog racism. It’s us breeding them like that. And some breeds should be made illegal and die out completey. Still in the end that means I blame humans, the breeders and the idiots getting these dogs.

Yeah a lot of people equate human behaviors to dogs which can lead to some really neurotic tendencies. Gotta respect their boundaries as much as you expect them to respect yours.

Believe it or not that’s a reflex working on both sides. The dog is conditioned to copy the same as it is taught and the human is conditioned to think that the dog leaning on him means he would scratch em somehow. Either ways one thing’s for sure , they are all real cute for pets and more like a family ☺️

I think this represents learned behavior in both humans and dogs. I work in a public setting, and interact with folks who have dogs. I won’t pet the dog if they approach me, but will offer a hand if they seem slightly friendly. No way will I handle them. I want to be prepared to get away. Sometimes I get to a point where I will be more friendly, but usually I just say hi to the dog and the people and move on.

Pet owners are mentally deranged power tripping abusers. Animals can be your friends and you can form symbiotic relationships with them, but “owning” and controlling them via mechanical restraints is immoral and is in fact an abusive relationship. It’s sick. The owners need to be rehabilitated and shown it’s safe to form friendships with other people who can reciprocate their human emotions. Their need to enslave animals for emotional support should be treated as the problem it is.

        Would you care to elaborate?

The pet industry sustains genetic-mutations that would naturally die out. Lineages are kept alive in a state of suffering for people’s narcissistic needs–oh that looks cute! I want that! What’s the wrong reason here: it’s not narcissism? It stems from something else?

You can quibble with some of the language. Maybe they don’t see themselves as power tripping abusers, but “lovers” with so much love to share that they enslave another sentient creature to be a proxy for a human-baby, a lover or a friend. I’m disgusted with pet owners. They’ve taken another sentient creature and they keep it in bondage–mechanical restraints and then rationalize it with them as the center of the universe. “Oh, he needs a lead or he’ll just run off and injure himself.” No. These are sentient animals that need to be with their own kind. Keep a dog locked up, alone inside a human-dwelling whilst the owners are at work. It’s purely for the owner’s narcissism that this situation even exists. “I want something to love! I want something to love me!” It’s barbaric and brutal for the other sentient creature.

I can’t even begin to make a rational argument for keeping birds in tiny cages. There’s none. The same goes for fish and I’m sure a large number of other animals I haven’t even considered. Life’s magic. Seeing fish in a tiny fish-tank attached to mechanical equipment that vibrates incessantly… it’s nothing but depressing. They don’t belong here.

The majority of ‘funny’ pet videos are videos of distressed animals.

Then you have the lamest defenses: “oh, I didn’t enslave them.” “I want to improve their lives.” “I adopted them from a shelter.” “I’m doing good!” “I’m a good person; I would be the best owner!” Yea, yea… absolve yourself from the situation. It’s not at all honest. It’s slavery of another species to satiate human-needs. Most often done by the ‘mentally-ill’.

I need to expand on that last part. It’s more accurate to say it’s done by people who feel (real or not) that their needs are not met. An elderly person might buy an animal to soothe their isolation. They’re not ‘mentally-ill’, but I would put such an individual in that category.

It’s something I despise Christianity for as it very clearly states that animals are for us, humans. Every time I’ve expressed this opinion people always react negatively. Their culture is an entitlement to other beings and I think the largest backlash is cultural. I think it’s a true and accurate perception of the relationship between humans and pets though.
