would be hilarious if the dye fucked up modern truck engines
cheaper, for now, until it’s not and home heating oil is jacked up, etc.
they know what they’re doing.
Recently renamed to super diesel.
Artificial diesel didn’t have the same ring to it.
It’s not artificial; it’s just dyed red to show it wasn’t taxed.
Thank God it’s not dyed blue cause fuck liberal diesel am I right or am I right?
/s
woooossssshhhhh……
America Diesel!
Right… So now there’ll be a heating oil shortage this winter. Perfect.
I love how it’s all because of the Ukraine war, definatley couldn’t have anything to do with the fucking iran war he started. Who’s writing these articles jellyfish? Whatever it was it didn’t have a spine.
Mountain Diesel, Code Red
I don’t know how this can possibly work in practice.
One, this may relieve the federal diesel tax by “allowing” red fuel but will not exempt state and local taxes that he has no authority to affect, meaning it may still be illegal at the state level to run red fuel.
Two, the red fuel dye used to identify untaxed/offroad fuel is aggressive and can be detected at extremely low concentrations. If dyed fuel has ever been in a tank it’s detectable for months if not years afterwards (depending on how much it gets refilled) and even then, sometimes they can swab the fuel cap for residue and detect it indefinitely. If a state trooper decides to have a tank dip done to inspect your fuel after this tax break stuff you are capital-F Fucked.

In other words, it fucks up the ability to tax diesel even long after the crisis is (theoretically/optimistically on Trump’s part) over. Considering that they could have just suspended the tax on non-dyed diesel and directed refineries to stop putting the dye in temporarily, but didn’t, one wonders if that was the real goal.
Absolutely fucks up the tax system. It would be a disaster for commercial trucking and I am betting you will not see widespread use of the untaxed fuel even if “allowed” as no operator wants to get on the wrong side of DOT after this is said and done.
This of course does not apply to light duty trucks and diesel cars where rednecks run red fuel in them almost all the time.
Hanlon’s razor has been getting an exceptional workout these days. It could just be that Trump is monumentally stupid and didn’t think about this at all.
Trump is monumentally stupid, but that doesn’t mean his Wormtongue-esque advisors are. Trump probably didn’t know red-dyed diesel existed before this; he definitely didn’t come up with the idea to let truckers use it himself.
He had no idea what it is, said as much during his word salad rally speech.
During his first term I would consider this to be a more likely explanation, but second-term Trump has been doing a pretty good job of purging anyone with actual competence. He wasn’t happy with how they kept telling him what to do last time around.
Whether he is too dumb to realize it or not, another important point is that he probably does not care about future problems.
Why would he, he’s never been held accountable for anything before.
We don’t tax fuel enough to maintain the roads as is. The states that are removing the gas tax going to see really terrible roads in the coming years because the funding mechanism went away. It also means we might have to shift to registration fees as the primary mechanism to fund roads, which we were already considering for electric cars but then we’re going down this road you might have to make it Universal to all vehicles, preferably increasing with vehicle weights
The states that are removing the gas tax going to see really terrible roads in the coming years because the funding mechanism went away.
Maybe, but more likely they’re just going to use more money from the general fund like they already do. Only 26% of the road infrastructure budget came from gas taxes to begin with. So yes, the funding would drop if they don’t make up the shortfall with other funds, but not as much as you think.
The roads are shit even with that 26%
Three, if demand for red fuel goes up, so does the demand for home heating oil (it’s the same thing in my neck of the woods).
I hope it’s a mild fucking winter or a lot of senior citizens are gonna freeze to death this year.
Not entirely; off road diesel is usually the exact same distillate as on road diesel but dyed for tax purposes. AKA the distributors quite literally pull the diesel from the exact same bulk tank but then dye it for delivery. Both onroad and offroad are a ultra low sulfur refined base oil with motor lubricity and cleaning additives. Actual heating oil is a similar distillate but without all the motor fuel additives and (i think) looser sulfur restrictions. It usually comes from a different supply chain than offroad diesel, except in more rural areas where it may be regular dyed diesel for supply chain reasons.
I’ve never tried running heating oil in a diesel engine, but it works the same as diesel in my Chinese diesel heater.
My info is probably 30 years out of date back when Mercedes bros would run it to save money in highschool. The same guys were messing with veggie oil a few years later, which I much preferred.
Oh yeah, back in the 90s before ULSD was a thing it’d be fine for sure… Older diesels would be fine with it but you might have issues with it in modern diesels expecting low sulfur and the other additives
Yeah anything with DEF/urea I’m sure is stupid to mess with.
I gave up on owning a diesel when the VW scandal hit. It was such a disappointment.
Hey, maga republicans aren’t known for “law and order” as much as they wanted the world to think… this much is very clear.
They don’t give a fuck, if daddy pedo said they could, they will.
Completely agree, but alternatively: is there enough red stuff and red pumps to meet demand even if it wasn’t a stupid idea for the reasons you gave? I doubt business owners are going to taint their existing tanks for the reasons you gave, and there’s not enough of a guarantee this scheme will be around long enough to build new infrastructure for it, and the massive fueling stations on the interstates damn sure don’t have red tanks/pumps ready to go.
Does this even put a dog in the fight for the businesses who add the dye, or who sell the red diesel?
If market manipulation like this were a goal, why not just put a tax holiday on all diesel?Edited to remove idea someone else already posted.
In farm counties sure, there’s probably double the amount of offroad diesel storage than there is onroad, they’d be fine. everywhere else though good luck lol.
So the idea was publicly aired without any internal discussion at all. Kind of makes me wonder who knew enough about it to put it forward as an option that also didn’t know enough about it to consider direct side effects.
Just forestalling the inevitable and making it worse at the same time.
Welcome, comrades, to centrally-planned economy.
It really resembles post soviet, Russian oligarchy.
I wonder why is the case.
But that’s communism
Donnie is getting desperate.
Desperate Donnie has a nice ring to it.
The Deluded Diaper Despot.
Best to not say his name at all I figure.
Per search, red-dye diesel is untaxed.
Also stated at least three times in the article you didn’t read – as early as the second paragraph of the main prose.

There is no text in the article, it’s just a headline. I can take a screen shot to prove it, but you’re just a nobody.
Here’s an archive of the article if you’re wanting to read it and having technical difficulties (or for anyone else who is; sorry, the Wayback Machine doesn’t capture the full article).
I was never going to assume you were lying about your experience if you claimed “there is no article”; it’d be such a batshit claim if you knew one existed.
This is what the CNBC link looks like in my browser backing up my “batshit claim”.
Since we’re now insulting each other, I want you to know that shortly I will block you, as Lemmy is a much better place when we’re not interacting with people who make us want to insult each other. Goodbye.
I hope you realize that you look like a complete dickhead in this exchange.
I was insulted first but I’m the dickhead? Wrong.
backing up my “batshit claim”.
I said “it’d be a batshit claim if” followed by something that I acknowledged wasn’t true – a hypothetical. As in it would’ve been batshit to knowingly lie about that. I understood why you couldn’t read the article, but why you couldn’t understand this basic if/then statement is beyond me.
Your mom definitely doesn’t say no to my body.
My mom died multiple decades ago, which, if your statement was true, would make you a necrophiliac.
Hell yeah brotha
I’m not sure if you’re using a broken app or something but there is definitely text there. Here are the first three paragraphs.
President Donald Trump has allowec the use of cheaper red-dyed diesel. typically reserved for farm operations, to be used more broadly in an attempt to bring down record-high fuel costs
Trump signed an executive order Monday evening stateside to temporarily allow truckers and farmers to use red-dved diesel - which is exempt from highway fuek taxes - and deferred related taxes on the fuel through the end of this year
The tax-free diesel is typically used by farm equipment, construction machinery, trucks and other off-road vehicles. It is therefore exempt from a 24.4-cent-per-gallon tax applied to dliesel fuel sold for highway transportation.
Here’s what CNBC looks like in my browser.
So he just approved a tax break? Wow, feels weird.
In the most roundabout way possible. Just remove the tax on undyed diesel, then.
Tax relief to soften the impact of high fuel costs is pretty normal government thing. Is why tax-free diesel exists in the first place. Trump’s mistake was causing the high gas prices.
It’s interesting to see Trump floundering on what he thinks will be popular among voters. Doing things that help Americans is an afterthought, he’s scrambling like a failing student for extra credit ahead of the Final.
Yea, an additional issue here is that those taxes were used for things. Removing them does save people money, but the increased price ends up costing us both at the pump and also in lost tax revenue.
But that’s exactly how businesses work. Short term gains at the price of long term anything.
And Mango Mussolini promised to run the government like a business.
Is why tax-free diesel exists in the first place.
Tax free diesel exists because the dyed diesel is not being used on public roads. Fuel taxes aren’t random government money grabs, they directly fund roads, bridges, and other highway infrastructure.
Fuel taxes aren’t random government money grabs, they directly fund roads, bridges, and other highway infrastructure.

That’s the budget the revenue from them goes into, but it’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the total cost of that infrastructure. The road system is massively subsidized from sources other than driver user fees.
Sure. My point was refuting the other user’s claim that “tax free diesel only exists to be a tax relief mechanism”.
Off road diesel is still taxed, you’re just not paying the FHWA excise tax if you’re not using it on highways.
He just doesn’t want anything that might slow down/stop/reverse his smash-and-grab being done on the United States. He’s giving himself and his family billions of dollars.
Also, he wants to stay out of prison.
Having Democrats run both houses of Congress could be a (mild) risk to him.
Louisiana declared a state of emergency recently to allow the same thing lol
More correctly that’s well yes but actually yes. The gas tax money goes to roads. The fact extra money is needed does not negate the fact gas tax money goes to roads. Without gas tax, even more general funding is needed.
Yeah, robbing peter to pay paul. These clowns don’t give a fuck though.
Tax free fuel from the fool.
Won’t that only cause the price of AG diesel to raise?
Some places use the same diesel and just inject red die at the nozzle. Or if they are filling bigger tanks add the die then.
Dye
Thank you kind person. It was right there in the title too. 🤦♂️
Threats of violence will get you banned, you know.
;-)
Instructions unclear, put a D20 in the fuel tank.
Sure, but it’s not like they have much need for diesel right now. The crops have all finished growing, there’s just that “harvest” thing they need to do before winter comes and everything stops. So they’re like 90% done already, right?
if that is true, then the refineries already know this, have reduced the amount of red dye diesel they’ve recently produced based on seasonal demand, which would mean that there’s not that much red dye diesel available, which makes this whole exercise more or less pointless.
I dont understand why they cant just temporarily stop tasking it.
The only reason red diesel exists is so they can detect it later if its used outside its specific usecases. If everyone gets to use it then whatd the point.
Depends on what kind of farming you’re doing. Ranchers need fuel year round. Citrus fruits harvest in the winter, greens, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel, cabbages, root vegetables, and alliums are winter harvest crops in some regions, and potatoes and sweet potatoes are harvested in late-autumn.
This is a Let Them Eat Cake moment.
